"There is nothing like returning
to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered."
~ Nelson Mandela
Welcome back Smithies! We hope your time abroad was
a rewarding and wonderful experience!
The reentry process can be challenging and will effect each of you differently. We
have compiled some information for returned students that we hope you’ll find
useful. If you have more questions, feel free to stop by the Office for International
Study, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Mon-Fri located in the Neilson Neon Archway, or call
(413) 585-4905.
Reentry
Challenges - Learn about jet-lag, reverse culture shock, acclimation
resources, suggested reading, useful websites, and more.
Academic
Reintegration – Study abroad students often find new passions
for knowledge that puts learning into a larger context. So how are you
going to “bring the learning home”?
Career
Development Office - Visit the CDO to learn how to incorporate your
education abroad experience into your cover letter, resume and interview.
Civic
Engagement and Social Action – Apply your new knowledge, skills
and attitudes to create social change. Putting your new skills and attitudes
into action can take the form of developing an organization, seeking to deepen
one’s civic engagement or simply getting involved with already existing
community service groups in the community.
Reentry
Action Plan – Use this form to help you organize your reentry
process. Having a plan is one of the best ways to overcome reentry challenges.
Transcript/ Credit Questions
Transcripts and/or Grade Reports from your program/university abroad must be sent
directly to Office for International Study. Keep in mind that it may take
a little time for your grades to appear on your academic record in Banner and on
your transcript. If you have questions about transcripts or credits, please contact
Lisa Johnson, Assistant Dean for International Study.
