Credit-bearing Internships
Internships in Francophone Europe
Qualified students, with the approval of the director, may pursue credit-bearing internships in the spring semester with the organization known as Internships in Francophone Europe. An internship with IFE, which by French labor law must be full-time and earn a full academic load of sixteen credits. These internships, closely supervised by IFE and generally overseen by the Smith College director, require IFE course-work and the writing of a significant final report.
Academic Internships in Biology
With the approval of the Smith College director, and in consultation with their major department, selected qualified students may undertake a four-credit or eight-credit internship in biology with a CNRS or INSERM research team associated with a Parisian university. Students become active members of research teams working on projects at the forefront of biological research, and study the specific techniques used in developmental, genetic, and molecular biology. In addition to conducting experiments, interns read scientific literature in the area of their research projects, write summaries of their readings, and complete year-end reports on their work. Research teams particularly welcome students who are willing to prolong part-time internships into full-time summer internships (which, for Smith College students, may be supported by Praxis grants). The director will make every effort to find internships for qualified students. If the number of available research teams is not adequate to student demand, students in biology, who need credit for the major, will have priority.
Non-credit-bearing Internships:
In recent years, students have pursued non-credit internships with the organizations listed below, and others.
• Conseil national français des arts plastiques at UNESCO (translating documents pertaining to the administration of artistic projects in France)
• Institut nationale d’histoire de l’art
• The French Senate
• Time Out Paris (writing a “Music: Rock, Roots & Jazz” column in Pariscope)
• Le Mouvement français pour le planning familial
• The RPR (Rassemblement pour la République, the antecedent of one of the main French political parties), doing environmental research
