Academic Program

Program participants enroll in 4 courses each semester, including courses offered by Smith and the consortium, and university courses. All students enroll in several required Smith Center courses in advanced French grammar, literary methodology, translation, and/or creative writing. Literature and theater courses taught by French university professors are also offered at the Smith Center. All instruction is in French.

Registration occurs after arrival in France, in consultation with the resident director, who is a member of the Smith College faculty familiar with the French university system. The director oversees students' academic and general welfare during the entire year and acts as a liaison to the university system and more generally to French officialdom.

Prospective students with specific academic needs should contact the Office for International Study at Smith College with questions about course offerings abroad.

Courses in musical performance, dance, and studio art may be available to majors or minors in those fields. Laboratory science courses are not usually available.

Fields of Study

Courses are offered in French literature and civilization, comparative literature, history, art history, music history, theater, film studies, political science, religion, and philosophy, among other disciplines. Internships are available in a variety of areas, including political and social science, art and music history, governmental organizations, and on occasion laboratory science. For more information, see Internships.

Tutoring

Special tutorials, arranged by the resident director, are offered at the Smith Center to supplement regular university coursework and to provide in-depth study in areas of students’ concentration and interest.

The Smith Center

The Smith Center at Reid Hall, a charming 18th-century building, with its private interior court and gardens, is a tranquil oasis in the busy Montparnasse district of the city. It provides computing and printing facilities, classrooms, and a library. The Center is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Students may also meet or study in university and public libraries around the city, including the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the much beloved Centre Georges Pompidou.
