One
academic year abroad
You will spend an entire year in the country of your choice in the field of study
you are pursuing. The Hamburg program also offers a one-semester Spring program
option. To learn more about each country's specific offerings, click on the city
on the left.
The "Language Pledge"
All courses are taught in the native language. Students are thus required to
have a minimum of two years of college-level language to qualify for application.
Students are also asked to sign a language pledge that obliges them to speak
only in the language of the host country during all activities associated with
the program.
Orientation Program
Each program begins with a three or four week orientation period. Intensive courses
in language, literature, art and civilization, as well as a series of cultural
excursions accustom you to your new surroundings and prepare you academically
and linguistically for the year ahead.
Who is eligible?
Applications are welcomed from well-qualified women and men enrolled in accredited
four-year colleges and universities. Admission to the program is based on a strong
academic record (a minimum B average at the time of application), two years of
relevant college-level language study or the equivalent, and evidence of maturity
and responsibility.
Health Requirement
After acceptance to a Smith JYA program, students will be asked to submit a health disclosure form with their enrollment materials.
It is recommended that each student have a physical examination
before going abroad and consult with a physician if taking prescribed medications
or undergoing psychological care. Although immunizations are not required for
European travel, we recommend that students have current polio, tetanus, and
hepatitis A & B immunizations. Student may wish to have additional immunizations
depending on their individual travel plans.
