Located in the heart of the city, the University of Hamburg enrolls approximately 2,000 foreign students within a total student body of 40,000. The Smith College Junior Year Abroad Program, established in 1961, has a program center located in the International House. There is a student lounge, 3 computers and a printer for student use, and the offices of the Director and Associate Director. Program courses are also taught in this building.
Program participants live with German students in coeducational university residence halls. Located throughout the city, the halls provide students with single rooms that remain available to them during vacation periods and through the end of the academic year. The rooms are modern and the common kitchens are well-stocked and clean. Students have access to their rooms through the entire academic year. Students must live in university housing; independently arranged housing is not permitted.
Students receive a board stipend each month to cover their meal costs. Though students cite the numerous restaurants in Hamburg as an inexpensive alternative to cooking, many students enjoy preparing their meals in shared kitchen facilities in their residence halls. Centrally located student cafeterias also provide reasonably priced meal options.
Cell phones are provided for students, but students must prepay for their calls. Landlines are not provided in residence halls, but can be installed. Students are responsible for all associated charges.
Students must purchase the Smith College student health insurance from Koster. Insurance coverege begins August 15, and ends the following year, on August 14. Students are also enrolled in the German National Student Insurance, which is included in the program costs. Smith also provides students with travel assistance services through AIG. |
