Orientation
Students begin the year with the orientation program to prepare for the academic and cultural life in Geneva through intensive language review and mini-courses in Swiss Francophone literature, culture, society and art. Students have the opportunity to become acquainted with Geneva and the francophone part of Switzerland through program excursions and cultural activities. They are introduced to the city of Geneva, its institutions, its museums, and, in particular, to the University and its various Institutes and libraries. An excursion to the Château de Chillon and the Rochers-de-Naye (near Montreux) concludes this phase of the program.

The Academic Program
Though students in the Geneva program are fully matriculated students in the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences at the Université de Genève, they may take courses and seminars in other affiliated institutes of the University, such as the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies and the European Institute. Students are required to take one French language course per semester at the Smith Center, taught by Swiss-French professors and tailored to meet the language needs of the group. Because the course catalogue for the Université de Genève is not available before late August-September, students arrange their final course selections with the assistance of the resident faculty director after arriving in Geneva. Students are encouraged to sample the variety of courses offered in the different faculties and institutes, to follow their own interests and to pursue independent academic work.

Laboratory science courses are generally unavailable to Smith students, due to a shortage of laboratory space. Prospective students with specific academic needs should consult the Office for International Study at Smith College.

A Smith College faculty member, serving as director in residence for the academic year, oversees students' academic and general welfare and acts as a liaison to the university system and Swiss officials.
