Passports and Residence Permits for Study
in Germany

Citizens of the United States: Each participant on the Smith College Junior Year Abroad program who holds a passport from the United States will enter Germany as a tourist. This permits her a maximum of three months before she must apply for a Residence Permit (Aufenthaltsgenehmigung) in Hamburg. During the first meeting of the Orientation Program the Director or the Associate Director will help students complete the necessary paperwork. A student who enters Germany prior to August 27, 2008 will be responsible for obtaining a residence permit herself (although the program will pay for it). Permits normally include permission to work part-time during the semester and full-time during semester vacation.

Citizens of European Union Countries: Citizens of European Union Countries do not need a residence permit (Aufenthaltsgenehmigung).

Citizens of Other Countries: Non-U.S. and non-E.U. citizens are required to apply for and receive a residence permit (Aufenthaltsgenehmigung) through the German Consulate in Boston prior to arrival in Germany.
