US, Canadian and EU Citizens: Citizens of the US, Canada, the EU and some other countries can enter Germany as a tourist, and apply for a Residence Permit (Aufenthaltsgenehmigung) after arrival in Hamburg. During the first meeting of the Orientation Program, the Director and Associate Director will help students complete the necessary paperwork. A student who enters Germany prior to the official start date of the program may be responsible for obtaining a residence permit herself (although the program will pay for it). Permits normally include permission to work part-time during the semester and full-time during semester vacation.
Citizens of other nations: Citizens of other nations are required to apply for and receive
a visa (Visum) prior to
arrival in Germany. Smith College recommends that students apply for their visas through the German Consulate in Boston. The Consulate in Boston will not accept visa applications more than 90 days in advance of the program start date, and take at least 25 days to process. This means that students seeking visas will need to plan to remain in the US for approximately the first 6 weeks of the 3 month period prior to the start of the program. Find visa application requirements online, and contact the Office for International Study for supporting documentation.
