International Experience Grants provide partial funding ranging from $500-$2000 toward the cost of international experiences. IEG awards rarely cover all of a funding request, so students should apply for additional funding and/or plan to bear a portion of the cost themselves.
International Experience Grants are awarded for study, research, service and unpaid internships abroad during interterm (January) or summer.
All Smith students are eligible for funding twice, however previous recipients must wait two years before applying for a second grant.
IEG awards may not be used for costs associated with semester or year study abroad programs, or for travel to one's home country, or for travel to a country with a US Department of State Travel Warning in place. The grant may not be used for activities that take place after a student has completed her Smith degree requirements. Students must be in good academic standing; student academic records will be reviewed.
Priority for funding goes to:
• students going abroad for the first time
• students with high financial need
• projects that last 3 weeks during J-Term, and 6-8 weeks during the summer
• projects related to the student's major, future plans or for language study
• projects for which the student demonstrates a strong background and preparation
Applications are due in the Office for International Study on:
October 15 for January term proposals
March 15 for summer proposals
Some college funds (including Praxis and the Tomlinson Fund) may have restrictions about combining funding sources. Students should familiarize themselves with the criteria of each fund to which they apply.
IEG Funding is not available for the following:
• travel to countries under a State Department Travel Warning. Exceptions for proposed travel to Kenya, Israel or Mexico may be made. Students will be required to sign an additional waiver if their IEG proposal is funded. See Smith's policy.
• costs associated with semester or year study abroad programs
• travel to a student's home country
• activities that occur after a student has completed her Smith degree requirements
• political or religious activities - please contact the Dean of Religious Life in the Chapel about the latter
• activities that entail missing class
• students who are on academic probation
