Grants of up to $4000 will be awarded to students for language study, language and culture study, or to conduct research related to special projects or senior theses during the summer of 2009 in Japan, Korea or China. Outstanding Smith undergraduates who have completed at least one year of study in the language of their destination country, and have an overall GPA of 3.3, are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to students who are unable to spend a semester or year in Asia because of curriculum imperatives that prevent long-term study abroad. Students who are permanent residents of China, Japan and Korea are not eligible apply to use this grant in their home country. This merit competition is not based on financial need.

Students who do not receive a Freeman grant may request to be considered for an International Experience Grant by March 15.
Please assemble and submit the following materials in person to the Office for International Study. Do not send any materials or letters of recommendation by email.
1. Application Cover Page
2. One page, double spaced essay describing your academic goals for the summer, and your background with the language and country, and your relevant preparation. Explain how this experience benefits your immediate and future academic, professional and personal goals.
3. List all previous international experiences with duration, location, and purpose of your travel.
4. Transcript from Banner, showing at least one
year of language study in the relevant language.
5. Letter of Recommendation: One letter of recommendation from a language faculty member if you are proposing language study OR one letter of recommendation from a faculty member who is familiar with your research proposal and your prior academic work related to your proposal.
6. Budget worksheet that includes program or project costs, room and board, international airfare and local travel, visa costs, and incidental expenses.
