Driving with German history and culture
Study the historical and cultural meaning of four German auto industries: Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche, in German society; visit Stuttgart, "the cradle of the automobile," Wolfsburg, Dresden, and Munich to: witness auto production first hand, visit historical landmarks and automobile museums, and attempt to attend the Automobile Expo 2008.
Willy Brandt and impact of Ostpolitik
Study the autobiography of the former German Chancellor Willy Brandt and the Ostpolitik and the transformation of the East Germany since the unification in 1990. In this project, I would visit Lübeck, Berlin, and the five new reestablished federal states in Germany, understanding the whole spectrum of Ostolitik and its impacts.
Discovering Italian Identity through Folk Music
Investigate how Italian folk music reflects the complex identity of contemporary Italy. Research the historical origins of the songs and use interviews with professors, experts, and musicians to find their relevance to modern Italians.
Refugee Resettlement in Switzerland
I would like to study services provided to incoming refugees to Switzerland and use this data to assess the opinion towards and treatment of refugees in Switzerland. I propose to collect data on services provided by four refugee resettlement agencies and then interview both refugees and employees of these agencies.
LifeStyle: Envisioning Expressionist Vienna
This project is dedicated to studying paintings created in Vienna, 1895-1935, and currently residing in Viennese museums. Content analysis of works will focus on themes of youth, sexuality and war. Contemporary Vienna will be envisioned through the history of bohemian neighborhoods, the historical maps, and establishment-story of the Cabaret Fledermaus.
Lost in Translation
A study of American writers in Paris and the reactions to their work by the French who read them.
Culture Choc…olat
A study of the relationship between Europeans and their food, aimed at determining the importance of chocolate in European culture. I intend to find out how chocolate rose up to become a symbol of Swiss ingenuity and what impact this simple pleasure has on the European people of today.
Doulas’ Roles in European Birthing Culture
I will investigate the developing community of European doulas, particularly in France and Switzerland, covering three main points: (1) the groundbreaking doula movement in Europe; (2) a doula’s education and practice, and varied perceptions; and (3) the points of comparison between France and Switzerland, regarding to the first two points.
Aesthetic Spaces: Exhibiting Germany’s Art
In visiting contemporary art institutions throughout Germany, I will seek an understanding of the art scene and to study the role of museum architecture as a functional space as well as a work of art itself. From such comparisons I will seek to gain an understanding of Germany’s artistic landscape.
The Avignon Festival
To participate in the Avignon performing arts festival, watching plays, listening to debates, going to conferences on art, in addition to meeting with directors, actors and other artists involved in the “Off” Festival, in order to discover new artistic movements and the work behind them.
