The Blumberg Traveling Fellowship allows students to extend their stay in Europe to pursue a research project of at least four weeks duration. It provides an exceptional opportunity for intellectual and personal growth through a combination of observation, research and first-hand cultural experience. It is intended to support students who can demonstrate a personal and intellectual commitment to their proposed project, and whose projects will enhance the student's understanding and appreciation of the host culture.
Five awards of at least $1000 are given each year. This is a merit competition; financial need is not taken into account.
Smith juniors studying in Florence, Geneva, Hamburg and Paris are eligble. Blumberg funding cannot be used with Praxis funding. Projects should be of at least four weeks duration and take place in the summer following the year abroad. Students studying in Geneva and Hamburg may propose a project during their long winter break.
Proposals for summer projects are due March 15. Winter proposals are due two weeks before proposed project start date.
Students who apply for a Blumberg Traveling Fellowship agree to prepare and deliver a brief presentation of their project at the annual Blumberg Traveling Fellowship Luncheon, attended by the donor Professor Phillip Blumberg and held in October. Visual aids are strongly encouraged in the form of PowerPoint, sound recordings, slides, photos, materials, etc. Bear in mind this end product when designing your project.
Applicants also agree to submit a two page project report, which outlines the activities undertaken, and an Expense Report to the Office for International Study in the first week of classes in the fall semester.
Students must consult with their JYA Program Director as they design and propose their projects.
Projects should be of at least four weeks duration.
Projects involving human subjects (such as interviews) must receive IRB approval before they will be considered for
funding.
The following items should pasted into a single word document, in the order listed, and emailed to akrause@email.smith.edu, at the Smith Office for International Study. Letters of recommendation should be emailed directly to akrause@email.smith.edu.
1. Application Cover and Budget: Use US dollar equivalents to estimate your expenses.
2. Project Proposal: Outline your project in terms of goals, procedures, and the concrete results you aim to obtain, and how you will present those results at the Blumberg Luncheon. Be specific in describing the project's academic validity, and its connection to your academic and or career goals. Include your project title at the top. 1000 words maximum.
3. Personal Statement: Describe your personal and academic preparation for the proposed project, including related activies and interests. 500 words maximum.
4. Travel Itinerary: Give a timeline including approximate dates of any travel.
5. Resume: Include all activities since high school, and any community, sports or arts involvment.
6. Letters of Recommendation: One letter should be from your JYA Faculty Director and the other should be an academic recommendation from a Smith faculty member. These should be emailed by the faculty member to akrause@email.smith.edu. When requesting a letter, be sure to provide the faculty member with information about your proposed project.
Your academic record will be also be reviewed by the committee.
The Janet Mitchell Blumberg Traveling Awards were established by Professor Phillip I. Blumberg and his children in 1976 in honor of his late wife, Janet Mitchel Blumberg '39, who spent her junior year with the Smith program in Florence.
