Class of 1983 Developing World Fund

Smith College Class of 1983 Developing World Fund

Grants of up to $3000 will be awarded to students studying abroad during spring semester in a third world country to intern or serve as a volunteer with a local organization in that country for two to three months in the following sumer. The purpose of this program is to provide Smith students with the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the causes and conditions of poverty and learn about solutions for alleviating poverty.

This fund has been established through the generosity of several women from the class of 1983 who have worked or lived in the developing world. For more information about the grant, please contact the Smith College Office for International Study.

Eligibility

Smith undergraduates who are studying abroad in a third world country for a year or semester are eligible to apply. Proposed projects must last at least two months. Praxis or International Experience Grants may not be used in conjunction with this grant. Funding is not available for use in countries on the U.S. State Department Travel Warning List. See Smith's policy.

Selection Criteria

Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated a dedication to serving the poor in the developing world and who express in their proposal a clear vision for translating that dedication into service which fosters peace, justice, and sustainable development. This merit competition is not based on financial need.

Report and Presentation Requirements

Students who receive this award agree to write to the donors and tell them of her experience, and to give a presentation about their experience to their classmates or housemates during the following fall semester.
