Argentina

CIEE at Universidad de Buenos Aires

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: The Council Study Center program is hosted by the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO). Combination of University classes and program courses designed especially for Americans; housing options include boarding houses, homestays, and apartments. Orientation, excursions, activities included in the program. Long break between semesters, during which full-year participants must make independent living arrangements.

COPA/Butler IFSA Argentine Universities Program

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: Integration into Argentine university system. Regular university course offerings are complemented by two special program courses open to program students only. All participants are required to take an intensive language course. Housing with Argentinean families. Orientation program included.

SIT: Southern Cone- Regional Integration, Development, and Social Change

Brazil

Brown University in Brazil at Pontificia Univ. Católica

CIEE at the University of Sao Paolo

Costa Rica

Organization for Tropical Studies, Duke University
TERMS: Fall / Spring
LOCATION: La Selva, Palo Verde, and Las Cruces
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: English, Spanish
PRE-REQUISITES: Full year of college-level biology, full year of Spanish.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: Program emphasizes ecological and environmental issues as well as language study and cultural topics. All students enroll in tropical biology (fundamentals and field research), environmental science and policy, and Spanish and Latin American culture. Three week homestay. Program moves between three research stations in lowland rain forest, lowland dry forest, and mid-elevation rain forest, and other sites throughout Costa Rica.
NOTE: Biological Sciences professors Paulette Peckol, Esteban Monserrate, and Thomas Litwin (Science Center director) have visited this program, and interested students may contact them if they wish.

School for Field Studies - Sustainable Development Studies
TERMS: Fall / Spring
LOCATION: Central Valley Region
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: English, Spanish
PRE-REQUISITES: Applicants must have completed a college level course in each of the following: ecology or environmental studies; international development, economics or anthropology; and Spanish prior to participation.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: Program based on a small farm overlooking the Rio Grande River in the fertile Central Valley. Academic courses are supplemented by field work and research. Rustic on-site accommodations.

University of Kansas at the University of Costa Rica

Mexico

PUEBLA: Program for Mexican Culture & Society in Puebla (Smith consoritum program)
TERMS: Fall
LOCATION: Puebla
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: Spanish
PRE-REQUISITES: Three or four semesters beyond the elementary level
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: Students build an indiviually tailored curriculum in collaboration with their home university and the Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla. Students will normally reside with a Mexican host family.

Guadalajara Engineering Program (Boston University)
TERMS: Spring
LOCATION: Guadalajara
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: English
PRE-REQUISITES: Smith requires one year of Spanish; elective courses have pre-requisites.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:
This program is ideal for second semester sophomore engineeering majors, and offers students the opportunity to engage with Spanish language and Mexican culture while making normal progress towards their degree. The program is hosted by Insituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey. Students enroll in Spanish language and a sociology course, and choose from the following electives taught by Mexican faculty in English: Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Waves and Modern Physics, Electric Circuit Theory, Principles of Molecular and Cell Biology and Biotechnology, and Engergy and Thermodynamics. Students live in residence halls.

School for Field Studies - Coastal Studies
TERMS: Fall / Spring
LOCATION: Bahia Magdalena, Baja
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: Spanish, English
PRE-REQUISITES: One year or more of Spanish
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: Focus on collecting biological and socio-economic data for a sustainable development management plan for the region and helping lJanuary 15, 2008 -->ish on these topics, plus a directed research course. Students share 4-person cabins.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: Program focuses on the development and management of fishery resources and attractions offered by the spectacular marine environment. Academic courses are supplemented by field exercises and independent research. On-site housing in residence hall.

Jamaica

SIT Jamaica: Gender and Development Studies Program
TERMS: Fall / Spring
LOCATION: Kingston
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: English
PRE-REQUISITES:
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: Seven-week homestay; rural homestay; educational excursions to rural parishes and economic development zones; and a five week Independent Study Project. The Gender and Development Seminar focuses on the interaction of gender, race, and class, analyzing how these factors have created a gender-based division of labor in Jamaica.

Dominican Republic

CIEE at Pontificia Univ. Catolica Madre y Maestra

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: Students generally enroll in language courses as well as Caribbean or Latin American studies courses taught to program participants by host country faculty. Housing with local families in a close-knit urban community setting.

CIEE at FLASCO

PRE-REQUISITES: Equivalent of three years of college level Spanish or the completion of a semester at CIEE in Santiago (above)
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: Program for students with advanced language skills to take college or graduate-level courses and have internships in the bustling capitol city. On-site orientation, excursions and activities included. Housing in a residential hotel or with local families. The required Development Internship is not usually eligible for Smith credit.
