Cultural opportunities and social happenings are abundant,
thanks to a unique consortium of five area institutions -- Smith, Amherst, Hampshire and Mount
Holyoke colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
A Five College Calendar of Events gives up-to-date information on
lectures, films, concerts and performances at all five colleges. If you took advantage of the
listings in a recent issue, you could have attended workshops with Buddhist monks from Drepung
Loseling Monastery during a Festival of Tibet, or you could have helped build homes for local
low-income families during the Five College Habitat for Humanity Work Weekend. You could have
seen the Dave Matthews Band in concert or attended the annual Midnight Madness party of the University
of Massachusetts basketball team. Or you could have signed up for a bus trip to New York City
with other college students from the area to visit the museums there.
And there are other privileges. If you're enrolled in a meal plan
at Smith, you may arrange for a meal at a neighboring campus while you're there. With a Smith
ID, you may borrow books directly from the libraries of any campus. What's more, Smith library
patrons can now use the Five College Delivery System to request book loans online directly from
the Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and UMass main and science libraries for delivery to Neilson
Library, usually within two business days.
