SmithSTAND's Story...

After watching In Darfur, a play that a Smith alum wrote about the genocide in Sudan, two Smith students who were strangers came together with one thing in common: the refusal to stand by while atrocities occurred abroad. In 2008, Jamie Sullivan (’11) and Andrea Hong (’11) set out to join a national coalition of over 800 high-school and college chapters world-wide.

Our Mission Statement
The purpose of SmithSTAND is to create and maintain an anti-genocide constituency at Smith College. We will work to promote awareness of past and present conflicts, including but not limited to those in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Burma; raise funds to benefit civilians in the present conflict areas; and lobby the United States government on behalf of the Smith College community. The organization will work collaboratively with the national STAND, surrounding communities, and other campus groups to reach our goals, though the organization’s priority will be to represent the interests of the Smith community. The organization’s campaigns will be driven by thoughtful awareness of and respect for the on-the-ground realities in the conflict zones.
