Meeting Minutes
May 3, 2000
Meeting of the full Staff Council was held at 11a.m. in the Mary Maples Dunn room in Pierce Hall.
Present: Sandy Bycenski, Cyndee Button, Audrey Pomeroy, Sam Rush, Stephanie Schoen, Bill Sheehan, Scott Girard, Jane Sommer, Ann Finley, Patty Kimura, Marion Abrams, Naomi Curtis Sturtevant, Patti Corjay, Sarah Lazare, Patricia Hayes, Michelle Finley, Cindy Rucci, Mary Clayton, Pat Rist, Mary Martineau
Excused: Chrissie Bell, Mary Ann Phoenix
Minutes Approved
The council unanimously
approved March and April meeting minutes.
Reflection of
Year
Scott Girard reflected on all that Staff Council had
accomplished. The picnic
table proposal is working towards completion.
The Staff Council Web page
was updated and redesigned by Sam Rush after
the Communications Committee
spent months coordinating employee discounts
from area vendors. The Activities
Committee had a successful and busy
year with many trips and also organizing
a benefit for cancer research, a
food drive for Northampton Survival Center
and a memorial planting in
memory of Marie L'Heureux. The Personal Policy
Committee met often with
Liane Sullivan-Crowley on issues such as: the employee
excellence
program, performance evaluation procedures, equal tuition assistance
for
all employees and employee work overload.
The Council Chronicle has been read and enjoyed by all.
Picnic Table
Proposal
The design of the picnic tables is hanging up the
process of the proposal.
The landscape designer is going to discuss what
is appropriate for the college.
Nomination and
Elections
Elections for Staff Council are a little behind. Bill
Sheehan ask for volunteers
for the Employee Excellence Committee. Staff
who were on last year committee
told that it is a very rewarding
committee, but time commitment is needed.
College Council appointments
are Sandy Bycenski, Patty Kimura, Scott Girard,
and Ann Finley.
Budget for Staff Council
Bill said the budget he submitted
to the controller, which was approved.
Budget for on going diversity
training was added into Staff Council budget.
Letter from Ruth
Constantine regarding this approval will be sent soon.
New
ARCA Representative
Sarah Lazare will be leaving the college and
asked for volunteer to replace
her as ACRA representative. After asking
some questions, Jane Sommer agreed
to replace Sarah in her own pushy
way.
Orientation Planning
Sandy Bycenski will update
the handouts to be given out at Orientation on
June 14th. She will notify
committee chairs to ask them to speak about the
past year
accomplishments, call Ann Godin to reserve Neilson Browsing room
and
contact Patty Hentz for ordering lunches.
Activities Committee
Cindy said one bus traveled
to NYC with no problems. She has chosen "Make
a Wish
Foundation" to be our benefit at the All College Picnic. 190
Activities Surveys were returned. Tanglewood Trip is planned for Aug 5th
.
Communications Committee
Sandy
said that Stanley Rosko called and said that BJ's Wholesale will be
coming to the College and he will be sending out an announcement to all
employees- $15.00 per card for 15 months.
John Eue said that the Staff Council Web Page is under Community/College Governance on the new Smith College Home page.
Personal Policy
Committee
Personal Policy Committee met with Liane
Sullivan-Crowley to talk about
employee workload issues. The committee
did not know how to address the
issue and asked Liane for her input.
Liane said that in Human Resources they have cross-trained people to cover basics of other person's job. HR is trying to get figures on what departments are maxing out their comp time.
Chrissie Bell suggested to Staff Council to listen to the community for identifying hot spots on campus. Liane needs employees to come to her with any workload problems or questions.
Mary Clayton asked staff council members to make sure employees are sending back the Employee Review forms.
