THIRD-SUMMER BANNERWEB REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS

Web Registration Dates and Times

BannerWeb registration will take place Sunday, March 7, 2010, 3:00 p.m. Eastern time through 11:00 p.m. Eastern time on Wednesday, March 10, 2010. Third-summer students should register for three electives in Term 1 and four electives in Term 2. Use CRNs, not SSW course numbers, to register!

If you cannot register during the above times or have other extenuating circumstances, you may fax your prioritized choices - noting CRNs for each course and your 99 number (required) - before 12:00 noon on Friday, February 26, Attn: Sharyn Zuffelato, (413) 585-7994, or email them to sswoas@smith.edu by the same date no later than 12:00 noon Eastern Time. Both email and fax provide a date/time stamp that will be used to prioritize registration order (but you will lose your priority status if you fail to provide CRNs or 99 numbers). OAS staff will begin registering you at the same time your colleagues begin BannerWeb registration. Be sure to provide lots of alternatives, as OAS staff cannot choose electives for you.

You will not be able to register until the dates and times specified above.

Right after the New Year, watch the SSW Bullletin for information on BannerWeb registration instructions.

Degree Requirements: Self Audit

  • Using the BannerWeb transcript of your courses and grades, add up the credits you earned in summer terms to date. Include any transfer credits that appear on the transcript.
  • Most students will have a total of 42 summer credits.
  • Subtract your total from 56 to determine the number of elective credits you still need to graduate. In most cases it will be 14, the equivalent of seven courses (three in Term 1 and four in Term 2). If you will need more than 7 courses/14 credits for the degree, contact Valerie Abrahamsen, Registrar, vabraham@smith.edu, before 12:00 noon on the Friday before BannerWeb registration to have your maximum credits reset.
  • Elective option credits for the degree (the FOAMS): To qualify for the degree, all students must successfully complete one course from each of the following option categories. Most students entering their final summer have already taken the (F) option in the second summer and may have completed others as well.
  • Total credits needed to graduate (Master's students): 131.
  • Make a note of any courses below that you have already taken (this list will be updated later in Fall 2009):

*Note: An asterisk denotes courses that can be used in more than one way (check elective listings), but a course may not be used to satisfy two options in your schedule.

Courses in brackets are not offered this year but may be on your transcript from a previous year.

In the categories above where you have not yet satisfied the degree requirement, refer to the schedule of Electives by term to find courses so coded. All other courses in your schedule may be electives of your "free" choosing. Those coded "3rd sum" or "Sr" on the schedule are exclusively for third-summer students but not required.

At the end of your four-day registration period you should have at least seven (7) courses: three (3) in Term 1 and four (4) in Term 2, with elective requirements met. Extra courses may be added during the Course Change period, April 11, 2010 (starting 3:00 pm Eastern Time) through April 14, 2010 (ending 11:00 pm Eastern time). Do not exceed five courses per term. (Caution: if you inadvertently drop a course needed to meet degree requirements, please notify OAS by email immediately!) Schedules shall be considered preliminary until classes begin.

For detailed descriptions of courses and the course Supplement, go to the online course listings. New electives must run for three years before they are considered for addition to the permanent online course listings.

Changes can and often do occur after registration. If you are registered for a course that changes term or meeting time, OAS will send you a notice of the change, attempt to register you again in the changed offering, and follow up if there is a time conflict.

Wait Lists

BannerWeb wait lists are not used at the School for Social Work. If a course is full at the time of registration, students must wait for an opening to occur during the Add/Drop period. Please do not pressure instructors to overload courses. Maximum enrollment in a course is the decision of the Sequence Chairs, and only the Chair may authorize exceptions.

Though the Office of Academic Support Services will run routine degree audits each term, students bear responsibility for meeting degree requirements.

Important Information on Disability Accommodations

Students needing accommodations/assistance for registration due to a disability should contact the Smith College Office of Disability Services in ample time to complete the necessary paperwork (usually two weeks to one month). Appropriate medical documentation must be submitted in accordance with the College's guidelines, which can be found on the ODS website.
