Elective Schedules for Summer Academic Session 2008 >
The School
reserves the right to withdraw, reschedule or modify courses as necessary.
First summer
students will take five required courses, scheduled in
eleven of these blocks, per term. All classes will be pre-sectioned
by the registrar, and students will be expected to arrange personal
commitments around this schedule.*
Second summer
students will participate in Web regisration in mid-March. Students may choose one elective in first
term and two electives, second term. The Registrar will schedule
required course sections to avoid conflict with the electives
chosen by each student.* Second summer registration
instructions will be posted to this website in February and updated as changes occur. Preliminary student schedules are available
to view on BannerWeb by mid-April.
Third summer
student schedules will consist of electives only. At the beginning of March, third summer students will register
for minimum degree requirements in both terms via the Web.
Extra courses may be added March 30 (starting 3:00 pm Eastern Time) through April 2 (ending 11:00 pm Eastern time) . Third summer registration instructions and elective schedules
will be posted to this website in February and updated as changes occur. Schedules shall be considered preliminary until classes begin.

*We understand that
childcare, commuting, and part-time work can add stress to your
very full academic schedule. If you have special circumstances
that you would like us to consider while scheduling your required
courses, please contact the Office of Academic Support Services (413)
585-7980, sswoas@email.smith.edu by the following deadlines: Friday at noon before the start of BannerWeb registration (second- and third-summer students); within
two weeks after acceptance (incoming students). You may also wish to consult the Smith College Office of Disability Services.
We mail instructions
and passwords for viewing schedules on BannerWeb to entering
students in late April. Note: The School reserves
the right to make changes to scheduled course offerings and
meeting times.
WAIT LISTS
There are no wait lists. If a course is full, students must wait for an opening to occur during the Course Change period, using the search feature in Banner Web to view course enrollments. Please do not pressure instructors to overload courses. Maximum enrollment in a course is the decision of the Sequence Chairs, and only the Chair may authorize exceptions.
ADD/DROP PROCEDURE
Forms for add/drop will be available at Check-In and in the Office of Academic Support Services. Please note deadlines below. This is not a BannerWeb procedure.
Second- and third-summer students may drop courses under the following conditions:
- The course is an elective that is not required for graduation;
- A third-summer or BSW Advanced Standing student will have enough credits to graduate if the course is dropped;
- A second-summer student will have the required number of credits on his/her Term 1 and Term 2 records if the course is dropped (this will almost always entail adding a substitute course; see below);
- The course is not a required course.
Due to the fact that almost all elective courses are filled to capacity, it will be almost impossible for a student to add a course. A student may attempt to do so via the add/drop form; please obtain the signature of the instructor. The student may not exceed the maximum number of credits allowed per term. Requests will be handled in order of receipt in the Office of Academic Support Services.
The course audit policy, Section 200.2 of the MSW Handbook, states, “Auditors and visitors are not permitted in class, with the exception of final summer students who are eligible to audit courses that are not fully subscribed on a first come, first serve basis with the permission of the instructor.” To request an audit, please complete the add/drop form, including the instructor’s signature.
Deadlines for Summer 2008 are:
- Term 1: 8:30 a.m., Thursday, June 5, 2008
- Term 2: 8:30 a.m., Thursday, July 17, 2008
Bring completed forms to the Office of Student Support Services, Lilly 115, during regular business hours. Forms with missing information cannot be processed. Students will be notified of course changes by Smith email.
Generally speaking, first-summer students are not eligible for add/drop.
