COPYRIGHT FAIR USE CHECKLIST

Note: The following are general guidelines.  For more information, see the Smith College Copyright Policies or contact Chris Hannon, Coordinator of Public Services, Neilson Library, by email or by phone 413-585-2911.

You may copy material for library reserves (hard copy or electronic) without copyright permission if all these criteria are met:

The material is being used for the first time.
The material is limited to:
 
- one chapter or 10% of a book, report, etc.
- one or two articles per journal issue
- one essay, short story, or poem in a collected work
- one chart, diagram, drawing, graph, cartoon, or picture

The material is not consumable (e.g., workbooks, tests).

The material is not for a course pack or anthology.

Material made available online (e.g., on a web page) is limited to students in the course.


All copies must have a complete citation and notice of copyright (e.g., ©1987 by Oxford University Press).

Copyright permission is required under any of these conditions:

The material has been used in previous semesters.
The material exceeds the size limits noted above.
The material is consumable (e.g., workbooks, tests).
Use of the material substitutes for the purchase of a book or subscription.
The material is used in a course pack or anthology.
