The typical course at Smith
College School for Social Work meets twice a week in classes
of two hours each. Such courses meet for a total of four
hours a week provide two quarter-hours of credit each term.
The few courses which meet for two hours a week provide one
quarter-hour of credit each term. The one course which meets six hours
a week provides three quarter-hours of credit each term.
While many courses are required
for completion of the Master's degree, there are both required
and elective courses. Students are expected to assume responsibility
for selecting courses that meet the degree requirements and
shape their learning. Smith College SSW offers a very wide range of
elective courses. There are several elective options open to each
student. Course selection material is provided each spring by the
School.
Courses in social
work education are often divided into academic sequences
which are roughly like departments in undergraduate programs. Practice,
Human Behavior in the Social Environment, Research, Social Welfare
Policy and Services, and Fieldwork are the five social work sequences. Smith
also has developed a set of Cross-sequence courses which
include content from more than one sequence and seek to integrate
in a holistic manner.
