As detailed in the Master's Thesis
Research Guidelines, published annually, it is expected that
students will first address questions regarding the quality
of the thesis or regarding the advising relationship with
the research advisor. If concerns remain following discussion
between the student and the advisor or if the nature of the
question renders such discussion inappropriate, a student
may contact the Chair directly at any time. The Chair of the
Sequence will work with the student and advisor to resolve
any difficulties or to provide additional resources if possible.
If work among the student, advisor and Chair does not lead
to a resolution of the concern, the student retains the option
of bringing the grievance to the Dean.
As detailed in the grading policy found in the Master's Thesis
Research Guidelines, advisors may not independently assign
a failing grade for the research project. The responsibility
for evaluating thesis work ultimately rests with the Chair
of the Sequence. Grievances regarding thesis grading on issues
of due process or evaluative judgment follow the procedures
for courses detailed in this Handbook.
The work to resolve thesis concerns and complaints will include:
- Issues that cannot be resolved at the student/advisor level are then directed to the Thesis Coordinator who will schedule a Thesis Coordinator Conference which is either an in-person meeting or a conference call with the student, research advisor and the Thesis Coordinator. The Thesis Coordinator will then send a report summarizing the content and results of this conference to the advisor, student and Chair of the Research Sequence.
- Issues that are not resolved during the Thesis Coordinator Conference are then referred for a Sequence Conference with the Chair of the Research Sequence. A meeting or conference call will be arranged with the Chair, Thesis Coordinator, research advisor and student. The Chair will then send a report summarizing the content and results of this conference to all attendees of this meeting.
- Issues that are not resolved during a Sequence Conference are then referred to the grievance procedures.
Note: Either the student or the research advisor may initiate the above.
