ADVANCED CLINICAL SUPERVISION

Contributing Faculty

Catherine Nye, PhD,
Dr. Nye is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Advanced Clinical Supervision Program at Smith College School for Social Work. She has published on the processes of learning and development in supervision and has worked and done research internationally. She was a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Southeast Asia and taught supervision to Greek and Turkish psychologists in Cyprus. Dr Nye is currently involved in research and collaboration with social workers in northern Thailand, where she has established and advises field placements for Smith MSW students.

Catherine Clancy, PhD, LCSW, Dr. Clancy is the Training Director of Social Work Practice at the Michael E. DeBakey, Veterans Administration Medical Center, Houston, Texas . She also maintains a private clinical, educational, and consulting practice in Houston. She has served as Adjunct Instructor at the University of Houston Graduate School of Social Work; Clinical Instructor, Dept. of Medicine at Baylor College School of Medicine; Consultant to the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners; and Field Instructor at Smith College School for Social Work.

Angela B. Farrell, MSW, LICSW, Professor Farrell is a licensed clinical social worker and Adjunct Lecturer at the UCLA School of Medicine, Dept. of Psychiatry, Neuropsychiatric Institute and Hospital. She is the Director of Social Work Training there and oversees social work students from a number of schools for social work. In addition, Professor Farrell serves on the staff of the adult outpatient psychiatric programs of two clinics - the Women’s Life Center and the Spanish Speaking Psychosocial Clinic. She also maintains a private practice with a specialization in women’s mental health issues.

Katherine Pfister, MSW, LICSW, Professor Pfister has been an adjunct faculty member of the SSW since 1982, where she teaches a course on Brief Dynamic Therapy. She has also taught continuing education courses related to this subject. She is a Faculty Field Advisor for Smith, and served for many years on the Academic and Field Work Performance Standing Committee. She was a clinical supervisor for Smith interns for 25 years at the Counseling Service at Mt. Holyoke College, where she also supervised clinical staff, and served as the Director of Training. She curently has a private practice in Amherst, MA, where she does psychotherapy and clinical supervision.

W. Leonard Hill, MSW, LCSW, Professor Hill is the Faculty Program Manager at the Adult Ambulatory Psychiatric Program, Yale Psychiatric Institute, New Haven, CT.  He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry in Social Work, Yale School of Medicine, the former Director of Training and Director of Social Work, Yale Psychiatric Institution, and former Adjunct Faculty member of the Smith College School for Social Work.  He is also a current faculty member of the Smith College SSW Clinical Practice with Children and Adolescents Certifcate Coordinating Team.

Louise Hopkins, MA, LCSW, Professor Hopkins works as a social worker at the Sheppard Pratt Health System in Baltimore Maryland and also maintains a private practice in Maryland. She has a long history of teaching and advising students at the Smith College School for Social Work.

Joanne Lindy, PhD, Dr. Lindy is the Director of the Advanced Psychotherapy Training Program at the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute. She has been an adjunct Associate Professor at the Smith College SSW since 1983 and is a former Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine. She has written extensively and also maintains a private practice at the Cincinnati Center for Psychoanalysis.

Katherine J. Jungreis, Ph.D., LICSW, Dr. Jungreis is an Adjunct Faculty Professor at the Simmons College School of Social Work. She has also served as an organizational consultant for the Harvard Medical School Human Resource Department (1999-2000), a clinical supervisor for Women’s Place Counseling Collective (1997-2002), and Clinical consultant to the Federal Employees Assistance Program (1990-2001). She maintains a private practice and has lectured widely on a range of topics related to work with couples, parents, and families.


Gerald Schamess, MSS, Professor Schamess is a Professor Emeritus, Smith College SSW having served on the Smith College faculty for over 30 years. He currently maintains a private practice in Northampton, MA. He is the editor of the Smith College Studies in Social Work, the author of numerous articles, and co-editor of School Violence and Children in Crisis: Community and School Interventions for Social Workers and Counselors (2003).
