Candidates for admission
must be graduates of accredited colleges and universities.
While no specific undergraduate major is required, the completion
of approximately 20 semester hours in the social, biological,
or psychological sciences is normally required. In addition,
it is preferred that candidates have at least one year of paid or
volunteer experience in human services. Preference in admission will
be given to those qualified candidates who have had at least one year
of general work experience.
In recognition of the academic accomplishments of prospective students who have received a BSW, the School offers a limited number of BSW Advanced Standing slots; the BSW Advanced Standing program allows students to complete their MSW in 15-months. Graduates of accredited BSW programs who are able to demonstrate second year level clinical practice skills and knowledge may apply for advanced standing. Students accepted begin in June and complete Session III (academic coursework from June to August), Session IV (advanced field internship from September to April), and Session V (final academic session, from June to August). Advanced standing students are also required to complete a research project and the Anti-Racism Field Assignment during their field internship. Candidates considering BSW Advanced Standing status are encouraged to contact or meet with the Director of Admission to discuss their background and plans for application.
The School begins to
process applications on September 1 for enrollment into the
next academic year, which starts in June. While the deadline
for filing applications is February 21, early
application is strongly encouraged; early admission decision
and early review of field placement requests will be given
to those who submit a complete application on or before January
5. Special requests for filing an application after
February 21 should be directed to the Office of Admission.
An applicant whose native language
is not English must take the Test of English as Foreign Language
(TOEFL) and the Test of Spoken English (TSE); official scores
must be sent to the School by February 1.

Applicants should have their
transcripts forwarded to the School immediately after applying
as applications cannot be reviewed without transcripts on
file. The Graduate Record Examination or the Miller Analogies Test
score may be submitted in support of the application, but are not
required for admission. However, on occasion, the School may request
one or the other of these standardized tests as needed.
Applicants
are responsible for ensuring that their admission material
is complete and should make every effort to provide all the
information requested in the application.
Applicants who are citizens
of other countries should follow the application procedures
outlined. Applicants are encouraged to have some experience
in a social work program before attending the School. Applicants with
an undergraduate degree in social work or equivalent course work may
qualify for advanced standing.
A substantial working knowledge of English is essential for admission. Applicants for whom English is not a first language must take the TOEFL iBT and have an official score report sent to the Office of Admission; a minimum score for the TOEFL iBT is 89. The minimum test scores for the paper based TOEFL is 550; computer generated is 207-233. The TOEFL requirement may be waived by the Admission Committee if English has been the primary language spoken in the home and at school. The School reserves the right to require the TOEFL of any applicant whose first language is not English.
