I decided on Smith College primarily because it is a clinical school. I’ve been in the field since 1982 and have been working with children and their families. This is a chance for me to return to a setting where I can hone and develop my clinical skills to a new degree. After a long time in the field returning to school felt a bit daunting. I initially wondered how I was going to fit in. However, once I began classes, I found I was able to contribute as well as view therapeutic issues in a different light.
I also appreciate my classmates. We come from a variety of backgrounds and social work arenas at both the micro and macro level. Our cohort has also benefitted from international perspectives. This diversity has especially enriched our discussions about practice. I had been told, and have indeed found, the learning community to be supportive of who I am. The professors here very much want to see me succeed.

I have been a practicing social worker in the Puget Sound region, working primarily with adolescents and their families. I have also been a consultant to agencies on cross cultural treatment issues. I was really excited by the school’s anti-racism commitment to practice. The readings have included multiple authors of color who have contributed another level of richness to the curriculum. I am looking forward to continuing to learn and synthesize this new knowledge base into my clinical practice, and hope to increase my scholarship.
