Glenna Klein, M.S.W. Class of 2008
It was speaking with several women graduates of
the Smith College School for Social Work program who had decided to return to
school in their fifties, and had survived the experience, which helped me to
move forward with the application process. Other factors in my decision had to
do with the close proximity of the campus to my home, the way the 27 month program
is laid out and the opportunity to have my two field placements take me to new
geographic locations for my learning experience.
I look forward to my classes
over the summer. We are only together as a student body for ten weeks during
the summer months. The small classes provide extremely rich dialogue and shared
experiences from placements. The discussions are energizing and informative.
I am more mature and courageous in my fifties and value the availability of our
professors and all faculty and staff on campus, from the café to the library.
You can be sure that there is support when you need it.
My first field placement took me to Durham, North Carolina. I
was at Duke University Medical Center in the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit. I
was nervous and excited upon my arrival in September 2006 but very quickly I
felt at home, a true member of the team, and I enjoyed the experience immensely. Duke
provided extensive opportunities for extra learning experiences. Lectures and
workshops were always available and I had my supervisors support to seek out
these sources for more information.
