Sally Comer , Ph.D. Candidate

I chose Smith College for my doctoral degree because of its focus on psychoanalytic theories and my interest in furthering the exchange and support of psychoanalytic ideas.  My academic and clinical experience at Smith College School for Social Work has been invaluable in helping me to articulate theoretical approaches and to apply them to clinical work.

During the past year, through classes and supervision, I became intrigued with the transference/countertransference phenomenon and working with the transference/countertransference process with oppressed populations.   Additionally, as an older student, I have a wealth of clinical experience, including long-term psychotherapy, with adults and children, as well as a two year certificate in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. I think these interests and credentials have fit well with the Smith program and have provided me with a transformative experience.  I am looking forward to moving my ideas into the realm of psychoanalytically informed research on affect regulation and attachment with infants and with  children with bipolar disorder.
