Admission to the Doctoral Program

"No other clinical doctoral program offers such rich, psychodynamic, clinical theory and practice, placed in the context of sociological, anthropological and post-modern theories. The coursework is truly psychosocial, preparing clinical practitioner scholars to teach and to do cutting-edge research on vulnerable and at-risk populations."

-- Joan Berzoff, Ed.D., Co-Director, Doctoral Program

The Doctoral Program is open to women and men who have graduated from an accredited school of social work following a period of post-master's practice. In unusual circumstances, direct entry from an MSW program may be considered for applicants who show exceptional promise and capacity to use a continuing course of study. The School has a deep commitment to diversity and to the training of professionals to meet the needs of people of color. This commitment is reflected in the development of a diverse student body as well as diversity in the School's faculty and staff.

Admission Deadlines

The School begins to process applications on September 1 for enrollment into the next academic year, which starts in June. While the deadline for admission is February 28, preference is given to applications filed before February 1: those received after that date will be considered to fill remaining vacancies. Special requests for filing an application after February 28 should be directed to the Office of Admission. A filing fee of $60, made payable to the Smith College School for Social Work, must be remitted with the application. This fee is not refunded or credited toward future fees.

An applicant whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Test of Spoken English (TSE); Official scores must be sent to the School by February 1.

To receive an application, call the Office of Admission at (413) 585-7960, or complete and submit our online form. All students are required to submit the Miller Analogy Test scores as a part of their application packet.

An electronic version of the Ph.D. application may also be downloaded by clicking here.

Advanced Clinical Standing

Applicants admitted to the Doctoral Program may, prior to enrollment, petition to take the Clinical Qualifying Examination normally scheduled at the end of the first clinical internship. Passing this examination, which is the same as the oral and written exam normally given at the end of the first internship, qualifies the applicant to waive one year of clinical internship. However, all three summers of academic courses are required. Further information about the Advanced Clinical Standing option may be obtained from the School by calling (413) 585-7960.

Application Materials

An application packet is normally made available with this booklet. If you do not have an application, you can request one from the Admission Office by calling (413) 585-7960 or by email at sswadm@email.smith.edu.

Applicants should have transcripts of all previous academic work forwarded to the School immediately as applications cannot be reviewed without transcripts on file. Students are also required to submit the Miller Analogy Test (MAT) scores in support of their application no later than the application deadline.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their admission material is complete and should make every effort to provide all the information requested in the application packet.

International Student Applications

Due to the time needed to process international student applications, applicants who are citizens of other countries must submit all application materials no later than February 1. A substantial working knowledge of English is essential for admission. International applicants are also required to take the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL). If the TOEFL test is taken on paper or by computer, the TSE (Test of Spoken English) is also required. The minimum test scores for the paper based TOEFL is 550; computer generated is 207-233. Official scores should be sent to the Office of Admission. The minimum test score for the TSE is 50. For applicants taking the TOEFL iBT, the TSE is not required. The minimum test score for the TOEFL iBT is 89. The TOEFL requirement may be waived if English has been the primary language spoken in the home and at school. The School reserves the right to require the TOEFL of any applicant whose first language is not English.

Individual Appointments

Although an interview is not required, should you wish an interview with a faculty member to discuss professional interests, please call the Office of Admission at (413) 585-7960 or email at sswadm@email.smith.edu. Occassionally, the Committee on Admission may initiate an interview if it feels one would be helpful.

Notification

Those who submit complete applications by February 28 will be notified no later than the end of April. Upon acceptance, students must submit a $250 tuition deposit to reserve their place in the entering class; this nonrefundable fee is applied to tuition.
