About the Bulletin

The Bulletin offers relevant notices, reminders, and deadlines for School for Social Work students. Students are encouraged to use the SSW Bulletin as a vehicle to post items that are relevant to their class or to the entire student body.

The Bulletin is updated weekly during the summer terms, and monthly throughout the fall and spring.

News From the Office of the Dean

In consultation with President Carol Christ, I have appointed Josh Miller as associate dean effective March 31, 2012. We look forward to Josh joining the Office of the Dean and continuing the excellent leadership he has provided in his many roles at the school.

Group for Spanish-Speaking Clinicians - NEW

If you are a clinician who conducts any of your clinical work in the field in Spanish, and if you are a fluent speaker, please consider joining the Spanish-speaking group this summer on campus! To give input on content and meeting times, please contact Audra Winn at awinn@smith.edu or at 413-281-9245.

FINANCIAL AID OFFICE

Mailings and Timelines from the Financial Aid Office

APRIL
Student bills for the 2012-13 academic year will be mailed by the end of the month. The bills will include tuition, room and board (if living on campus) and the activity fee. For students who have financial aid, grants will also appear on the bill and loans will be reflected as pending credit and will be disbursed to your student account just prior to the start of classes.

MAY
Payments will be due my mid-May to avoid any problems with the check-in process.

If you are eligible for a refund from your loans, refunds will be processed the week before classes begin. We encourage you to complete a direct deposit form to have your refunds deposited directly into your bank account to avoid missing a check while you are transitioning to campus. You can find the form at http://www.smith.edu/controller/PDF_files/DirDepFWS%20Note.pdf Please return the form to the Controller's Office per instructions on the form.

Student bills are sent out monthly with the exception of May and August. (In May students are in transit and getting ready to come to SSW. In August, students are relocating to their field sites and addresses are being updated during this time.)

Appeal deadline for financial aid awards is April 15.

OFFICE OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES

Course Change Period, 3rd summer Students - NEW

Third summer students may add courses to their Summer 2012 schedule via BannerWeb starting at 3:00 p.m. eastern time on Sunday, April 8, 2012. The system will close on Wednesday, April 11 at 11:00 p.m. eastern time.

2nd and 3rd Summer Students

Please note that last year's courses will be deactivated in Moodle at the end of the third week of April. Please plan accordingly.

Important Thesis Deadline Information - NEW

The April 15 deadline is looming. For more information, please refer to the excerpt from the Thesis Guidelines.

EMPIRICAL PROJECTS: The student is expected to have completed the data collection process. For students working on quantitative projects, the database should be in an MS Excel file. This Excel file and codebook should be emailed to Marjorie Postal, research analyst, on or before April 15. For students working on qualitative projects, all interviews should be transcribed and narrative data should be organized so that the data analysis process can begin.

THEORETICAL PROJECTS: The student is expected to have completed a substantive draft of the third chapter (usually the second theory chapter). Although research advisors may require the introduction or the methodology chapter in addition to the phenomenon chapter.
