I have an employment opportunity for six students living in the Western MA vicinity. There is a new Smith undergraduate course concentration in Community Engagement and Social Change, and I am looking for SSW students interested in mentoring the undergraduates. This employment will provide opportunities to mentor students who are interested in communities and in bettering the world they live/work in, and will enhance your listening and reflecting skills. All the while getting paid to do so!
There are two kinds of mentoring opportunities:
-Work in a community-based agency (e.g. Project Coach, Clinical Support Options-Northampton, MotherWoman, maybe Kensington School) as a bridge between 5 College undergraduates and the agency administration. You would oversee the volunteers' work, helping them to think about issues of entry, diversity, professional behavior and demeanor, and the strengths of and challenges facing each agency.
-Students can also work in a Teaching Assistant capacity for a course (e.g. psychopathology, gender studies, community engagement, child development, psychotherapy) at Smith or one of the other 5 Colleges. The selection of courses is TBD.
Students will work in the Fall semester to plan for their course and become familiar with their agency. They will mentor actively November-April.
What Skills You Need:
Maturity, interest in mentoring undergraduates, some experience in community-based clinical or research work, familiarity with organizations serving adults, children, and/or families.
Salary:
$1,500 for the year.
To Apply or for Questions:
Send a resume to Dr. Marsha Pruett, mpruett@smith.edu, with a short letter explaining how and why you are interested in this opportunity. APPLICATION DEADLINE: July 28, 2014.
I look forward to speaking with you.
