Roger R. Miller Dissertation Grant 2007 - 2008
Purpose: To support the highest level of scholarly dissertation research on at-risk populations by doctoral candidates at Smith College School for Social Work. This annual grant was established by the Executive Committee of the School’s Alumni Association as a tribute to and in honor of Professor Roger Miller. The Grant stands at $1,000.
Grant Application Procedure: In applying for the Roger Miller Dissertation Grant, the doctoral candidate must submit to the Alumni Association three blind copies of his or her completed and committee-approved dissertation proposal. A list of the committee members should be included on the title page. A signed letter of support from the chairperson of the dissertation committee is required for the application to be considered complete. The letter of support must also be mailed directly to the School for Social Work Alumni Association at the address below. Applicants will receive written confirmation upon receipt of their materials.
Application Deadline: The application materials can be submitted to the Alumni Association between April 15 and May 11. Materials should be addressed to the Alumni Association’s Roger. Miller Dissertation Grant, ATTN: Roxanne Pin, Director, Office of Advancement and Alumni Affairs, Smith College School for Social Work, Lilly Hall, Northampton, MA 01063.
No incomplete applications will be reviewed. Award decisions will be made at the end of May; all applicants will be notified of the Review Committee's decision in June.
Review and Award: The application materials will be evaluated through a blind review process by a panel of three members of the Executive Committee. The panel will be appointed by the President of the Executive Committee and will include at least one Smith College School for Social Work Ph.D. graduate. If no Smith Ph.D. graduates are currently serving on the Executive Committee, outside reviewers (i.e., another SCSSW doctoral graduate) may be used as consultants. The proposals will be reviewed for quality of scholarship, strength of methodological approach, and contribution to the existing knowledge base. The study must also have the substantive focus of advancing social workers' knowledge of working with at-risk populations. This would include studies that focus on the under-served, disenfranchised, and oppressed populations of our society. Studies can be of a theoretical, developmental, practice-related or policy nature.
Guidelines: The review panel requests that submissions adhere to the following outline:
- Committee member’s signature page
- Tentative abstract
- Full introduction, to date
- Literature review
- include sub-headings of topics
- detail a salient section, maximum length 10 pages
- Full methodology, to date
- include instruments and questionnaires
- Bibliography, to date
Upon review of the application materials by the panel, the dissertation grant will be awarded in July of each year. The Executive Committee has the authority to withhold awarding the dissertation grant if no applicants meet the criteria in that given year. Notification of the awarding of the Roger Miller Dissertation Grant will be by mail.
