Alumni Student Network

The Alumni Student Network is a supportive group of alumni interconnected across the U.S. and Canada. In areas where there are larger concentrations of both students and alumni, there is an appointed alumna/us who is the Placement Area Coordinator (PAC). The role of the PAC is to be the key liaison between students, alumni, the Regional Representative, and the School. The Advancement and Alumni Affairs Office provides additional support for events by facilitating communication between students and Placement Area Coordinators (PACs).

Alumni are solicited for services that they are willing to offer to prospective students, current students and alumni. PACs are then provided with lists of services that their local alumni are willing to offer, such as those who are willing to call students, host events, be mentors, etc. Students and alumni are notified of the PAC in their geographic area and are directed to contact the PAC if in need of assistance. The PAC then matches requests with alumni volnteers from their lists.

Other things a PAC may do:

  • Welcome students to the geographic area and introduce them to other alumni as they enter the placement period;
  • Share information and resources on social work professional development (e.g., networking, career options, referral information) or connect the student with other alumni who can do this;
  • Validate today's Smith SSW student experience in a personal way;
  • Provide local information about the field placement city to the student (e.g., public transportation system, affordable restaurants, child care services, medical facilities, etc.).

Things a PAC does NOT do:

  • Provide official, formal monitoring or evaluation of the field placement or of the relationship between the student, FFA, and the supervisor;
  • Serve as a student's research advisor;
  • Provide low-cost psychotherapy which is a conflict of interest with the PAC role; students should be directed to other alumni who have offered this service instead;
  • Provide financial support to the student.

If at any point an alumna/us is unclear about the best way to support a student, the Regional Representative or Roxanne Pin, Director of Advancement and Alumni Affairs should be contacted. The list of Region Representatives can be found here: http://www.smith.edu/ssw/alumni/sswaa_standing.php.

Roxanne can be contacted at (413) 585-7964 or rpin@email.smith.edu.
