Alumni Student Network

The Alumni Student Network is a supportive group of alumni interconnected across the U.S. and Canada. In areas where there are larger concentrations of both students and alumni, there is an appointed alumna/us who is the Placement Area Coordinator (PAC); other geographic areas have Alumni Area Coordinators (AAC) who provide support for local alumni and alumni who are relocating to the area. The role of these volunteers (PAC and AAC) is to be the key liaison between local students and alumni, their Regional Representative, and the School. The Develpoment and Alumni Affairs Office provides additional support for events and facilitates communication in many ways. To contact the office with questions send an email to sswalum@smith.edu or call (413) 585-4290.

Placement Area Coordinators (PACs) and
Alumni Area Coordinators (AACs)

Alumni are solicited for volunteer services that they are willing to offer to prospective students, current students and fellow alumni. PACs and AACs are then provided with lists of services that their local alumni are willing to offer, such as those who are willing to call students, host events, be mentors, etc. Students and alumni are notified of the Coordinator for their geographic area.

Things a PAC/AAC may do:

  • Welcome students/alumni to the geographic area and introduce them to other alumni;
  • Share information and resources on social work professional development (e.g., networking, career options, referral information); connect students and alumni with other alumni who can do this;
  • Validate the Smith SSW experience in a personal way;
  • Provide local geographic information (e.g., public transportation system, affordable restaurants, child care services, medical facilities, housing options, etc.).

Things a PAC does NOT do (specific to students during internship):

  • Provide official, formal monitoring or evaluation of the field placement or of the relationship between the student, FFA, and the supervisor;
  • Serve as a student's research advisor;
  • Provide low-cost psychotherapy (conflict of interest); students should be directed to other alumni who have offered this service instead;
  • Provide financial support to the student.

If at any point an alumna/us is unclear about the best way to support a student, contact the respective Region Representative or the Development and Alumni Affairs Office. Region Representatives can be found here:
