INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVES

Current initiatives

> Beginning in 2007, and starting in Thailand, students can complete field work internationally. This first foray into international social work builds on work done by Catherine Nye, Ph.D., who worked as a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Southeast Asia in 2000-2001. She has collaborated extensively with educators, social service providers, and religious leaders in Thailand in subsequent years and has negotiated a relationship for Smith with Chiang Mai University. The internship includes low-cost housing, mentorship, and supervised clinical training (services are provided in English). The School's curriculum has also expanded to help prepare students for training in new cultural settings.
>

Ongoing conversations are in process about additional new international field placements. Possibilities include Bulgaria, Uganda, Mexico, Israel, China and others.

Priorities

> This priority is listed under Masters Student Internship Priorities in greater detail. The funding needed per internship is $5,000 per year or $126,000 endowment.
> The ability to develop and maintain international placements is critical to the School's mission to serve diverse populations and is central to its ability to attract the most talented students. $15,000 is needed on an annual basis to fund the development of these programs: $375,000 in principal would establish an endowment for this need.
