Doctoral Program Facts
| > |
At a Council for Social Work Education (CSWE) meeting of Doctoral Program Directors in March of 2006, it was reported that Smith is rated #8 among the largest social work doctoral programs. This ranking is based on our average number of doctorates awarded each year. We award approximately eight degrees each year (which is approximately the same number awarded by the University of Michigan, Fordham University, Case Western University, and the University of Pittsburgh). This ranking is also based on the fact that approximately 55% of our graduates seek faculty appointments upon graduation compared to an average of 21% of those graduating from other institutions. |

The average doctoral student need for financial aid is approximately $10,000 per year.
|
| > |
Tuition, fees and expenses for the typical student in the doctoral program are in excess of $60,000. This includes required supervision and dissertation expenses. |
| > |
Less than $25,000 in total financial aid is available to be awarded each year to doctoral students; the average per student award is approximately $2,600 per year. |
Current Scholarship Priorities

General Scholarship and Financial Aid |
| |
Both current funds and endowed, unrestricted funds are needed. Unrestricted funds allow the School to award aid where funds are most needed. Restricted funds risk not being awarded if students in need do not meet the criteria. To close the gap between existing funds and the total unmet financial need of doctoral students, an additional $50,000 is needed per year. To establish an endowment that would generate $50,000 per year a principal of $1,250,000 is needed. |

Supervision Support |
| |
Doctoral students are required to obtain supervision while in their clinical practice internships. The additional out-of-pocket expenses can range from $200-$800 per month depending on the circumstances and also where the student is located. An additional $30,000 per year is needed to assist with this expense or $750,000 in endowment funds. |
Research Priorities
Research and Teaching Assistant Stipends
Such stipends would reward and encourage doctoral candidates as they progress through their degree program. The ability to provide stipends or fellowships to highly qualified candidates to work with faculty on research projects is a win-win situation as the faculty member would also receive the benefit of an advanced level research assistant. The average stipend is $10,000 per year with an average of four candidates in need of fellowships. To establish an endowment that would generate $40,000 per year in funds, the principal needed for an endowed fund is $1,020,000.
