A Commitment to Anti-Racism and Diversity
When the faculty voted to work toward becoming an anti-racism institution, they made a commitment to embed that work into every aspect of the curriculum and the field. Other aspects of diversity such as class, disability, aging, religion and spirituality, sexual orientation and gender are also included in the School's mission of excellence in clinical social work.
Students are expected to learn and demonstrate anti-racism efforts and an appreciation of diversity in course, field assignments and participation in the School's community-wide initiatives. These include student agency assessments, the anti-racism field assignment and links to critical thinking, self-reflection, course assignments, participation in community-wide training activities and community-wide anti-racism activities. The anti-racism field assignment project ties the student in a meaningful way to the School's commitment to fight oppression, to promote social justice and to implement an action-oriented project.
The School also supports faculty with their scholarship, practice and service by offering ongoing anti-racism training. Faculty have made contributions through scholarship, practice and service. The school offers a required anti-racism course and faculty are consistently working to improve and update this course. In addition, the School is committed to being proactive in policy development and hiring efforts as well as by providing anti-racism training for administration and staff.
Expanded Use of Technology
In order to remain competitive, it is imperative that the School keep up with current technological innovations. A few of the current priorities are online courses for students, supervisors and alumni, the ability to create pod casts for downloading lectures, video conferencing and investing in web cams for research advising.
Student Personal and Professional Development
The School needs to create opportunities both during the summer and winter terms for students' personal and professional development for clinical social work practice. Providing ways to learn strategies of self care and increasing the quality of attention are particularly important in practice settings that are challenged by uncertainty.
An additional $20,000 per year is needed to provide the training, development and access to technology outlined above. $505,000 would provide the principal necessary to establish this as an endowment to meet this need.
