Announcements
Five College Library Catalog maintenance

From 9:00 pm on Thursday, June 28, until 9:00 am on Friday, June 29, the Five College Library Catalog will be unavailable due to emergency maintenance.
That means you will not be able to search for books in the Five Colleges. You *will* have access to all the databases (PsycInfo, etc.) as well as to the Journal Locator http://www.smith.edu/libraries/research/article.html for access to online journals. If you desperately need information about books during this period, try searching in WorldCat. You can get bibliographic information there and sometimes a call number that is similar to the Smith call number. Please try to complete your catalog searching before Thursday at 9 pm so you don't run into problems. If you do get stuck, please email the reference desk (neilref@email.smith.edu) and we'll get back to you as quickly as possible.
We apologize for this inconvenience at this very busy time of the term.

A09 Representative Needed for the Academic and Field Work Performance Standing Committee
Each year, a student from the incoming class is elected and selected to serve on this committee for two years. Currently, the AFWPSC is looking for a dedicated, thoughtful, and discerning A09 student who is interested in serving the Smith SSW community during their time in the program. The A09 student would meet along with the rest of the committee to hear and determine next steps for any Master's student issues related to performance (academic or field) and conduct (personal or professional). Interested students can nominate themselves. For more information about the position or the nomination process, please see the recruitment flyer or contact the current AFWPSC reps. All nominations should be submitted to Claretta Daniels at cdaniels@email.smith.edu by 3:30 p.m. on July 20, 2007. (Early submissions are appreciated). If you have any questions whatsoever, please do not hesitate to contact the current AFWPSC student reps via Smith e-mail or by phone: Claretta Daniels, A07 (301-346-5614) or Sheela Joshi, A08 (617-275-3982). They would love to talk with you!

Attention Graduating Class
Hello A07, by request here is a recap of our class meeting and some new information. The following message includes:
--sign-up for class activities
--thesis breakfast
--Baccalaureate service
--skits
--new senior event (read to find out more...)
--graduation gowns: WE HAVE SOME FOR YOU TO PURCHASE
--Class Gift ideas needed!
There are four events for graduation that need to be planned by our class. The Thesis Breakfast is the first held event. This event involves coordinating the menu with the dinning hall employees, decorating the room, organizing the purchase of beverages etc… There will be non-alcoholic beverages served as well as limited Mimosas. Jamie Loveland has graciously agreed to be the leader of student planning for this event and is in contact with those wonderful students who volunteered to help. If you would like to take part in organizing the event contact her at jlovelan@email.smith.edu.
The second event is the Baccalaureate Service. This event involves booking the chapel, organizing performers, decorating etc… Liz Burnworth has kindly agreed to lead the group. You can contact her at eburnwor@email.smith.edu if you would like to volunteer.
There is also Skit Night. A lot of work is involved in putting on skits. The group needs to arrange decorations, lighting, booking the hall, auditions etc… If you want to be in the skits you don’t need to sign up to help. Their will be auditions later in the year to decide which skits will be performed. Any help organizing, however, would be appreciated. Kathy Sapp has graciously agreed to be the leader of the group. She can be contacted at ksapp@email.smith.edu.
Finally, there is always an informal Thesis Party after thesis deadline. Last year, it had to end early as the place it was being held was not officially booked. This year Dawn King and John Gill have agreed to organize the event. There will be events held that don’t involve alcohol at the beginning of this party. Contact Dawn King if you would like to help at dking@email.smith.edu.
Thank you to all who signed up to help or will be. Your help will make graduation activities much better. Last years class gift was supposed to be graduation gowns. Unfortunately, we did not receive nearly enough for the class. We will be selling the ones we received for reduced cost (cap: $2 gown: $20 Hood: $18) and the proceeds will be funneled back into our class budget. Please contact Sara Willott, swillott@email.smith.edu, as soon as possible if you would like to buy one of these gowns; it is first come first served basis.
We all have to be in the graduation attire if we want to be in the ceremony. It does not matter the length of the gowns or the type of cap as long as they are the traditional black ceremony attire (e.g. if you have one from undergrad you can still wear it). We all must have the appropriate hood because the colors represent our degree. We are currently working on finding a way for graduating students to be later refunded $20 on their cap and gown purchase which will come out of the class budget. We will let you know more about this when we know.
Finally, we also need to decide on a class gift. Suggestions for the class gift can be emailed to hdespres@email.smith.edu. Thanks, Hillary Despres and Sara Willott Class Reps A07.

T-Shirt Drive: Latigi Orphan Care Center in Gulu, Uganda
While engaged with a psychosocial capacity building project in Northern Uganda, initiated by Professor Joanne Corbin in collaboration with Professor Joshua Miller, both professors visited the Latigi Orphan Care Center, which is run by one of their students. The Latigi Orphan Care Center is home to more than 900 orphans in Gulu, Uganda. For over 20 years Uganda has endured armed conflict, which has resulted in an increase in the number of orphans and child headed households. One of many needs articulated by workers at the orphanage is for clothing. Summertime is the perfect opportunity to finalize some unfinished Spring cleaning for a good cause. Collection boxes will be located in various locations on campus from Thursday, June 21 - Friday, July 20:
- Seelye - First Floor
- Near Campus Center Mail Room
- Lilly Hall - Entrance
- Cutter/Ziskind - Dinning Hall (Cutter entryway)
All sizes are welcome as the recipients will range in age. New and “gently used” shirts are acceptable; please ensure that used shirts are washed. For questions or more information please contact Shadé Brown at (413) 585-4208 or sbrown2@email.smith.edu thanks!

Counseling Services for SSW Students
This summer, the School will offer limited counseling services for students. The services will be focused on brief counseling on issues affecting educational performance as well as further assessment and referral when needed. Students will be limited to three sessions.
The goal of the three sessions is to assist the student in developing more effective ways of dealing with difficulties and to provide referrals in those situations where further clinical work is needed. If you miss an appointment and fail to notify the counselor 24 hours prior to the appointment time, the missed appointment will be counted as one of your three sessions.
The school has contracted with four independent counselors. If you choose to use this service, you may contact one of the counselors listed on page 21 of the Summer Information Booklet. You must pick up a billing form at the Office of Fiscal Affairs and bring it with you to each session. The counselor must sign the form after each session. After the third session the counselor shall retain the form and submit it to the school. This information will remain confidential. If you have any questions about this process please contact Associate Dean for Administration Diane L. Tsoulas.

Joan Laird Thesis Prize
The Joan Laird Thesis Prize for Excellence in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender Studies will be awarded to the author of a thesis in the area of lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender studies that best advances social work theory, knowledge and practice.
