COMMENCEMENT 2013

Commencement 2013 will be held on Friday, August 16, at 4:00 p.m. in John M. Greene Hall.

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

The Smith College School for Social Work is very pleased to announce that Salman Akhtar, MD, will be the main speaker at the 2013 Commencement exercises.

Dr. Akhtar was born in India and completed his medical and psychiatric education there. Upon arriving in the United States in 1973, he repeated his psychiatric training at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and then obtained psychoanalytic training from the Philadelphia Psychoanalytic Institute. Currently, he is Professor of Psychiatry at Jefferson Medical College and a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia. He has served on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association. His more than 300 publications include 14 books – Broken Structures (1992), Quest for Answers (1995), Inner Torment (1999), Immigration and Identity (1999), New Clinical Realms (2003), Objects of Our Desire (2005), Regarding Others (2007), Turning Points in Dynamic Psychotherapy (2009), The Damaged Core (2009), Comprehensive Dictionary of Psychoanalysis (2009), Immigration and Acculturation (2011), Matters of Life and Death (2011), The Book of Emotions (2012), and Psychoanalytic Listening (2012) – as well as 40 edited or co-edited volumes in psychiatry and psychoanalysis.

Dr. Akhtar has delivered many prestigious addresses and lectures including a Plenary Address at the 2nd International Congress of the International Society for the Study of Personality Disorders in Oslo, Norway (1991), an Invited Plenary Paper at the 2nd International Margaret S. Mahler Symposium in Cologne, Germany (1993), an Invited Plenary Paper at the Rencontre Franco-Americaine de Psychanalyse meeting in Paris, France (1994), an Invited Keynote Address at the Annual Meetings of the Division 39 of the American Psychological Association (1994), the Plenary Address at the Annual Meetings of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Association (2002), a Keynote Address at the 43rd IPA Congress in Rio de Janiero, Brazil (2005), the Plenary Address at the 150th Freud Birthday Celebration sponsored by the Dutch Psychoanalytic Society and the Embassy of Austria in Leiden, Holland (2006), and the Inaugural Address at the first IPA-Asia Congress in Beijing, China (2010).

The recipient of many awards, Dr. Akhtar received the Best Paper of the Year Award from the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (1995), the Margaret Mahler Literature Prize (1996), the American Society of Psychoanalytic Physicians’ Sigmund Freud Award (2000), the American College of Psychoanalysts’ Laughlin Award (2003), the American Psychoanalytic Association’s Edith Sabshin Award (2000), Columbia University’s Robert Liebert Award for Distinguished Contributions to Applied Psychoanalysis (2004), the American Psychiatric Association’s Kun Po Soo Award (2004) and the Irma Bland Award for being the Outstanding Teacher of Psychiatric Residents in the country (2005). Most recently, he received the highly prestigious Sigourney Award (2013) for distinguished contributions to psychoanalysis.

Dr. Akhtar is an internationally-sought speaker and teacher, and his books have been translated into many languages, including German, Turkish, and Romanian. His interests are wide, and he has served as the Film Review Editor for the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and is currently serving as the Book Review Editor for the International Journal of Applied Psychoanalytic Studies. He has published seven collections of poetry and serves as a Scholar-in-Residence at the Inter-Act Theatre Company in Philadelphia. The Smith College School for Social Work warmly welcomes Dr. Akhtar to the community.

Tickets

Tickets are not needed for the Commencement ceremony. They are, however, required for the reception that follows, which is held in the Campus Center.

Graduates are entitled to a total of five tickets, which includes one for themselves. They may also invite as many people as they wish to either Commencement or the reception, but each additional ticket is $10 for guests attending the reception. SSW will distribute complimentary tickets to graduating students in late July or mail tickets to graduating post-resident doctoral and M.S.W. students. Additional tickets will be available for purchase at the reception desk in Lilly Hall prior to Commencement.

If you are a graduating Ph.D. student or a graduating post-resident student and are unable to come in to purchase extra reception tickets ($10 each), please contact the Receptionist in Lilly Hall, (413) 585-7950.

Please note: additional tickets may only be purchased by check, and we regret that there can be no refunds once tickets are purchased.
