About the Department:
The Department
of Spanish and Portuguese at Smith College offers a wide range
of courses in the languages, literatures, and cultures of the
Spanish and Portuguese speaking world: Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean,
Latin America, Portugal, Spain, and the United States.
We
offer two major/minor field options: Spanish and Portuguese/Brazilian
Studies. We also cultivate strong ties with Latin American Studies,
American Studies, Comparative Literature, Medieval Studies, and
Study of Women and Gender. Finally, as a fundamental part of our program's
cross-cultural objectives, we encourage students who may be considering
one of our majors to devote their junior year to study abroad
on the Iberian Peninsula or in Latin America.
