Lecturer Josh Carreiro graduated from the University of Connecticut with a BA in both Sociology and Philosophy. After graduation, Josh worked for a short time in social services while caring for his new son, Gabriel. When Gabriel started kindergarten, Josh entered the graduate program in Sociology at the University of Massachusetts . He completed his MA and is currently writing his dissertation.
Josh's early research focused on media representation of the US labor movement. That interest culminated in a study of news media coverage of workers illegally fired for participating in union organizing drives, which was published in The Labor Studies Journal (2005, vol. 30, pp. 1-20). Currently, his research is focused on interactive service work, consumption, identity, and class formation. Specifically, Josh is examining the ways that new and alternative forms of work organization, in combination with “lifestyle” or socially conscious consumption, impact worker and consumer conceptions of self and class inequality. The first stage of this research project involved an analysis of a union organizing drive of the nation's largest natural and organic foods supermarket chain. Examining the narratives of the union organizers, the workers, and the company, the paper argues that worker empowerment models present unique opportunities for class consciousness and union organization, but provide distinct obstacles as well. This project resulted in an article published in Research in the Sociology of Work (2006, vol. 16, pp. 25-53).
Josh lives in Northampton with his partner, Jen, their son, Gabriel, and an array of animal companions (three cats, a dog, and a rotating cast of foster cat families). Phone: (413) 585-3377 Office Location: Neilson A/09 Office hours: jcarreir@email.smith.edu
