Leslie King                                                        

Associate Professor

Leslie is Associate Professor of Sociology and Environmental Science and Policy.  She holds a B.A. in French from Hunter College and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Illinois.  Leslie teaches courses on world population, environmental sociology, and globalization; and she was recently awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to create a new interdisciplinary course in environmental science and policy.   Leslie's research has focused on population policies, mainly in countries with relatively low fertility.  She has been particularly interested in how ideologies of nationalism, gender, race/ethnicity and class are implicated in the construction and implementation of population policies. Leslie's current work examines debates over immigration policy among environmentalists in the United States . Leslie's articles on population-related issues have appeared in Ethnic and Racial Studies, European Journal of Population, The Sociological Quarterly, and Gender & Society . In addition, she is co-editor of an anthology, Environmental Sociology: From Analysis to Action
