McAfee VirusScan 8.7i for Windows Vista, XP, and 2000

This document explains how to install McAfee VirusScan 8.7i on a Windows Vista, XP, or 2000 computer, and set up the program to automatically update your virus definition files. Regular updates help ensure that VirusScan can detect and block new viruses as soon as they are identified by McAfee's virus team.

VirusScan 8.7i includes McAfee's new AntiSpyware program. Unlike Ad-Aware or Spybot, the AntiSpyware program runs continuously in the background, automatically detects and removes any spyware it finds, and keeps its spyware definitions up-to-date all on its own.

The instructions also explain how to configure the VirusScan program to scan all files when you open them, and scan your fixed disks (hard drives) on demand.

Please allow 10 minutes to complete the installation and setup. If you have any problems, call the User Support Center at x4487.

We recommend that you read all the notes below and PRINT these instructions before you begin. That's because you will eventually be required to close your browser window to complete the installation.

READ THESE NOTES BEFORE YOU BEGIN!

If you have never installed Smith's version of VirusScan before, first be sure that you don't have any other anti-virus program installed on your computer, including Norton Anti-Virus or Sophos.

You can check your list of installed programs by going to:

Start / Settings / Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs

If you find Norton Anti-Virus on your list of programs, please follow these special instructions to uninstall it completely. Simply using "Add or Remove Programs" will not uninstall all Norton components.

If you find any other anti-virus software, be sure to REMOVE the other program FIRST, then install VirusScan.

Remember, DO NOT install VirusScan without removing the other program first.

PART 1. Downloading the VirusScan Installer

IMPORTANT! These instructions have been revised to provide increased security during the VirusScan installation process. Please follow them carefully.

1. Close all open applications except your browser.
   
   
2. Click on the following link to begin downloading the installer: VirusScan 8.7i for Windows
   
   
3. Internet Explorer: In the File Download window, click Save and save the file to your desktop.
   
   Mozilla Firefox: In the Opening vse87.exe window, click Save File and save the file to your desktop.
   
   
4. Go to Start /Settings /Control Panel and choose Add or Remove Programs.
   
   
5. When the program list appears, select McAfee VirusScan Enterprise and remove it.
   
   If you also see McAfee AntiSpyware Enterprise Module in your list, remove it as well.
   
   
6. Close the Add or Remove Programs window and the Control Panel.
   
   
7. Locate the vse87.exe file on your desktop and double-click to launch the installer.
   
   
8. If you see a security warning, click Run to proceed.
   
   
9. The installer will run, then you will see the McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Setup window. Continue with Part 2, below.

PART 2. Installing and Configuring VirusScan 8.7i

1. In the McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Setup window, click Next.
   
   
2. In the Network Associates Licensing window:
   
   
   1. In the License expiry type drop-down menu, select PERPETUAL.
      
      
   2. Click on I accept the terms in the license agreement.
      
      
   3. Click OK.
      

3. In the Select Setup Type window, select TYPICAL and click Next.
   
   IMPORTANT:  Do NOT select "MAXIMUM" protection, as it will create problems with Cisco Clean Access and other processes.
   
   
4. In the Select Access Protection Level window, select Standard Protection and click Next.
   
   
5. In the Ready to Install window, click Install.  Setup will now begin copying files.
   
   
6. When the installation is complete, you will see the McAfee VirusScan Enterprise setup has completed successfully window.
   
   
7. Click Finish and continue with Part 3, below.

PART 3. Installing upgrade components, including McAfee AntiSpyware

1. When the McAfee AntiSpyware Module v8.7i Installer window opens, click Next.
   
   
2. VERY IMPORTANT!  In the McAfee Licensing window:
   
   
   1. In the License expiry type drop-down menu, select PERPETUAL.
      
      
   2. Click on I accept the terms in the license agreement.
      
      
   3. Click OK.
      
      
3. The installation may take a minute or two. When it's done, click Finish.
   
   
4. If the system prompts you to restart your computer, restart.
   
   
5. Continue working as usual.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed and configured the McAfee VirusScan and Anti-Spyware programs.
