McAfee VirusScan 8.5.0i Plus for Windows Vista & XP

This document explains how to install McAfee VirusScan 8.5.0i Plus on a Windows Vista or XP computer, and set up the program to automatically update your virus definition files. Regular updates help ensure that VirusScan can detect and block new viruses as soon as they are identified by McAfee's virus team.

For people who already have VirusScan 8.5.0i installed on their computer, this document also explains how to upgrade to VirusScan 8.5.0i Plus.

Windows 2000 users:  Instructions on this page are for Windows Vista & XP only.  For your instructions, click here.

What's different about VirusScan 8.5.0i Plus?

VirusScan 8.5.0i Plus includes McAfee's new AntiSpyware program. Unlike Ad-Aware or Spybot, the AntiSpyware program runs continuously in the background, automatically detects and removes any spyware it finds, and keeps its spyware definitions up-to-date all on its own.

The instructions also explain how to configure the VirusScan program to scan all files when you open them, and scan your fixed disks (hard drives) on demand.

Please allow 10 minutes to complete the installation and setup. If you have any problems, call the User Support Center at x4487.

We recommend that you print these instructions and read all the notes below before you begin.

READ THESE NOTES BEFORE YOU BEGIN!

Only if you already have McAfee VirusScan 8.5.0i installed on your Vista or XP computer, we strongly recommend installing the 8.5.0i Plus upgrade.

  1. Close all open applications, except your browser.

  2. Click here to launch the upgrade installer.

  3. Internet Explorer users:  In the File Download window, click Open or Run.
Firefox users:  In the Opening vse6sp.exe window, click Save File.

  5. When the download is complete, skip ahead to PART 3 of the main instructions.

ALL OTHER USERS: If you have never installed Smith's version of VirusScan before, first be sure that you don't have any other anti-virus program installed on your computer, including Norton Anti-Virus, Sophos, or even a trial version of VirusScan. You can check your list of installed programs by going to:

Start / Settings / Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs

If you find any anti-virus software on your list of programs, including a trial version of McAfee VirusScan, be sure to UNINSTALL the other program FIRST, then install Smith's VirusScan 8.5.0i Plus.

Remember, DO NOT install VirusScan 8.5.0i Plus without removing the other program first.

Important note for Norton AntiVirus users: Please follow these special instructions to uninstall Norton AntiVirus, because simply using "Add or Remove Programs" will not uninstall all Norton components.

If you have any other anti-virus program besides Norton, use the Add or Remove Programs feature on your Windows Control Panel to remove it.
