TRUNK ROOM STORAGE

Academic Year Trunk Room Storage Off Campus Storage Options Link
During the academic year house trunk rooms should only be used for the storage of empty boxes and suitcases. Trunk rooms should be kept locked. House residence life staff have the key to the trunk room. Students needing access to the trunk room outside should contact their house residence life staff.

Summer Trunk Room Storage
Each house has some storage areas, which may be used to store a limited number of items. Students are to store their belongings in the house they will be living in during the fall semester. Use of Trunk Room space is a privilege and students who use the space must work with their house leaders to keep Trunk Rooms organized and meeting all College and City Codes. House Presidents, Residence Life Staff and Building Services work collaboratively to maintain and monitor the use of Trunk Rooms. If a house or individuals are not respectful of this privilege the use of Trunk Room space will be revoked.

Students will not have access to the house trunk rooms during the summer. Students will be able to gain access to the trunk rooms once residence life staff have moved into their houses at the beginning of the fall semester. If there is an extenuating circumstance and a student must gain access to the trunk room before the opening of the fall semester they should contact the Office of Residence Life.

Damage and Security

Trunk rooms are not secure, and no item that has any value, real or sentimental, should be left in a storage area. The college will not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage to any item, regardless of the cause of the loss. Items that are not properly labeled or which do not belong to residents will be removed and disposed of. Students are urged to bring all items of any value home during the summer, or to use locally available commercial storage facilities.

Packing and Labeling

There is very limited space for storage in each house. Smith College recruits students from all over the world and transportation is easier for some than others. As students think about storing items during the summer, the College asks individuals to think about how far they are traveling and if at all possible to take their belongings home with them for the summer. The College recommends and highly encourages students to take all their belongings home whenever possible.

If students choose to use their house Trunk Room storage space there are expectations on how items are packed and labeled. All items must be packed in boxes or plastic tubs which can be securely closed (functional, sturdy suitcases and trunks are permissible). Large plastic trash bags and other bags cannot be used to store items. Storage of floor lamps and rugs should be kept to a minimal (limit of 2 floor lamps and one rug no larger than 5’ x 9’). If stored, rugs must be rolled, tied and labeled and lamps must be labeled. Refrigerators can be stored in trunk rooms but cannot be larger than 3 feet high and must be labeled appropriately. All items must be labeled with official college trunk room stickers which house residence life staff will distribute.

Items which cannot be stored (if found in trunk rooms they will be discarded):

Cleaning and Management of Trunk Rooms

All items must be stored properly in house trunk rooms. Boxes, storage tubs and other items must be stacked neatly providing easy access to get in the trunk room as well as to the back of the trunk room. Items stored in non trunk room spaces or outside of the designated trunk room area will be discarded regardless if it is labeled or not.  Students who improperly store items will be charged for the removal of the items. Houses will be charged for items not labeled that are improperly store.

Trunk Room Clean Outs
Each year house residents must clean out their house’s trunk room which will be coordinated by the House President. Building services creates a trunk room clean-out schedule at the beginning of each academic year. During the academic year trunk rooms should be empty except for luggage and other empty storage boxes. Anything that does not belong to a current resident (exceptions for students who are studying abroad or taking a leave of absence) of the house should be discarded.

Throughout the academic year and most especially at the end of the academic year House Presidents and Residence Life Staff will periodically check for improperly stored items and general organization of the trunk rooms. Items that are not stored within the trunk room guidelines will be discarded.
