Each area coordinator is responsible for the overall functioning of one of six areas of campus: Green Street, Center Campus, Upper Elm, Lower Elm, East Quad, and West Quad. The area coordinators directly supervise the residence life student staff living within the houses. The area coordinator also advises the house presidents and the house governance system. In addition, the area coordinators act as sources of support and referral for staff and resident students, assist with educational and social programming, act as on-call professionals who handle crises or situations of immediate need, and handle disciplinary concerns.
Marge Litchford is the Area Coordinator for the Green Street area, which includes Hubbard, Washburn, Chapin, Tyler, Lawrence, Morris, and Hampshire Houses, as well as 44/54 Green Street and 47 Belmont Ave. Marge encourages all to visit her in her area office in the basement of Hubbard house. Jen Matos is the Area Coordinator for Center Campus, which includes Cutter, Friedman, Haven, Wesley, Hopkins, Park, Sessions, Tenney and Ziskind. Jen earned her B.A. in English Language and Literature from Smith College in 1996. While a student at Smith, she was a resident of Gardiner House and then later the Head Resident of Duckett House. She went on to work at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, Smith College as an Area Coordinator in 1998, and Mount Holyoke College before returning to Smith to earn her M.A.T. in English. She has worked in different capacities at the University of Utah and Clark University. A certified English teacher, she also has teaching experience on the high school level. Jen will be working on an Ed.D. in Social Justice Education from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. In her spare time, Jen likes to go for drives, cook, play her acoustic guitar, write, play wiffle ball and dodge ball, and perform at some stand up comedy venues. Jenny Kurtz is the Area Coordinator for the Upper Elm area which includes Lamont, Capen, Dawes, Northrop, Parsons and Talbot. She has worked as a Residence Coordinator at Smith College for the past three years. During this time, she also completed her M.Ed. is Social Justice Education at the University of Massachusetts. Donique McIntosh is the Area Coordinator for the Lower Elm area which includes 150 Elm, 12 and 26 Bedford Terrace, Albright, Baldwin, Chase, Conway, Duckett, and Gillett. Her background is in social work, theology, and education. She is currently working on a doctorate in Social Justice Education at UMass. She is very interested in getting to know Smith students, so feel free to stop by her office in the basement of Chase. Brandon Buehring is the Area Coordinator for the East Quad which includes King, Scales, Jordan, Emerson and Cushing Houses. Brandon grew up in southern Texas. He has a B.A. in Cinema and Studio Art from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX and a M.Ed. in Counselor Education from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. He comes to Smith College after four years of work as an AC in ResLife at Wesleyan University. He is interested in anti-oppressive/social justice education in Higher Education. Kamala Kiem is the Area Coordinator for the West Quad Area, this includes Comstock, Wilder, Morrow, Gardiner, and Wilson Houses. She was born and raised in Jamaica. She loves playing tennis, spade, and spending time with her newborn nephew-- Benjamin. She has a B.B.A. from Florida International University, a M.A. in Student Affairs Administration from Michigan State University, and M.Ed. in Social Justice Education from UMASS, Amherst. Kamala’s professional experiences include being a Residence Director at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, an Assistant Residence Director at UMASS, Amherst, and a facilitator/consultant for Intergroup Dialogues.
