in Smith houses >
Housing at Smith College is highly
recognized. We have consistently received high rating from
several different independent surveys of leading colleges
(for a recent example, see the 1998 edition of The Princeton
Review's Best 311 Colleges). Residential life at Smith
is considered to be an important part of a traditional-age
student's education. Students come from varied backgrounds
and the houses provide unique opportunities for students to
learn about each other's experiences. Our unique house system
works toward that goal, and our traditional-aged undergraduates
are expected to live on campus for four years unless studying
away from campus. Living successfully in the college houses
depends on balancing the freedom of an individual with a sensitivity
to and respect for the rights of others.
The 35 houses and complexes range in style from modern to Gothic to classic revival. We offer a wide variety of options, but each has a sense of community at its core. Depending on which house you are assigned, you may have between 10 to 100 housemates. No matter what size your house is, you'll find people with a wide range of experiences. In most houses, students from all four classes are represented. Entering students including first year students, transfers and exchange students are assigned to double rooms and in some cases, singles, as they are available. Returning students generally live in doubles, suites and or single rooms.
Dining Services operate and maintain 11 kitchens and 15 dining rooms on campus. Dining at Smith College, we offer lots of options and plenty of variety, and in most cases students eat in their own houses. All Smith houses are wired for CyberSmith, a computer network that enables student to connect right from their own rooms to Smith servers and the Internet and to access numerous computer research tools and other services.
The house system enables you to formally and informally meet new people and make new friends. The live-in residence life staff consisting of head residents or house coordinators, house community advisors, along with elected student leaders such as house presidents and each house councils which sponsor many programs including lectures, study breaks, discussions, debates, films, workshops, and community service and field trip activities.
We expect that each Smithie become
familiar with the college handbook. This includes various
housing and residence life expectations, policies and procedures.
If you have any questions or concerns about living in campus
housing or getting involved at Smith, please contact our staff
members. We invite you to take advantage of the many leadership
opportunities the college offers inside the classroom and
out.
In closing, welcome to Smith
College, we look forward to providing a sense of community
and a home away from home!
