Wilder
House is one of the 10 houses of "the Quad."
The complex was built in stages starting in 1922, when a
housing shortage prevented all students from living on campus.
When all the houses were completed in 1936, William Allen
Neilson, then the president of Smith, pronounced it the "Great
Quadrangle." Although today's students just call it "the
Quad," they still think it's a great place to live.
Wilder, and its neighbor Comstock,
were built in 1928. Together they share a covered front entrance
and a bell tower. Their
back wings join to form a courtyard which is nicknamed
the "mini-quad." The Comstock-Wilder party is
traditionally held in either the early fall or late spring
to take advantage of the great weather.
82 students live in the 57 single rooms, 11 doubles, and one triple room in Wilder House. Most of the doubles have large bay window seats that overlook Paradise Road. Wilder prides itself on having a great mix of people. Every room is wired for CyberSmith.
Wilder recently underwent major renovations, including the installation of an elevator amd new bathrooms. Renovations included a complete replacement of all building HVAC, plumbing, electrical and life safety systems. New finishes, lighting and new and refurbished furnishings were installed throughout. New ramps to the first floor and a new passenger elevator provides access to all floors.
