WASHBURN HOUSE

Washburn House was built by Smith College in 1878 to house the incoming class of 1882. One of the original three houses constructed to integrate a full academic experience for women, Washburn was named for William Barren Washburn, one of the first trustees of the college.

Washburn House has evolved a great deal in its 117 years. From 1933 to 1938, it was a cooperative house, and residents performed all the household chores. During the Spanish Civil War it served as the Spanish-speaking house on campus, due to the impossibility of sending students to Spain for academic study. Recently, Washburn has undergone construction, making it wheelchair accessible.

Past residents of Washburn have remained devoted to their college home, and have returned to Smith to celebrate significant reunions. Former Washburn residents presented Washburn with a 400 book collection on the house's 50th birthday. More recently, Washburn graduates have surprised current residents with carnations on the morning of Rally Day, an all-college celebration day.

Today, Washburn, one of the smaller houses at Smith, is home to 43 students. There are 15 single rooms, 14 doubles, and a wheelchair accessible suite in the house. Each floor is equipped with a communal bathroom. Also located on the first floor are a living room with a grand piano, a TV room which is well-populated each night; and a pool room which is used for both social and academic gatherings. The basement houses coin operated laundry facilities and a study room containing the house library. Every room is wired for CyberSmith. Additionally, Washburn sports a 24 hour computer lab which holds six computers, and is quite convenient for correspondence and papers.

Washburn sits in close proximity to academic buildings. Moreover, administration buildings, libraries, and the athletic complex are also nearby. Downtown Northampton is within a 5-minute walk.
