Built in 1898, Tyler
House was the last of six dormitories constructed in the
very early years of Smith College on
what was the original campus. An impressive Queen Anne-style
brick building with a large front porch, Tyler House was
named for William Seymour Tyler, one of the original trustees
of the college.
Sixty-nine students from all four classes live in Tyler House. There are four floors with 41 single rooms and 14 doubles. Each room is wired for CyberSmith.
A favorite gathering place is the comfortable living room where parties are held and where residents have a chance to sit and watch television or socialize. For more serious pursuits there is a house library. House traditions include in-house trick-or-treating, first snow party, secret snowflake, and tea on Friday afternoons.
Located on Green Street, Tyler House is near the central campus area, where the classroom, libraries, and administrative buildings are situated. The music building and the gymnasium are nearby as well. That means it's only a quick dash from Tyler to nearly any class. The athletic fields and scenic Paradise Pond are also nearby, and downtown Northampton is only a short walk down Green Street, which is lined with boutiques and specialty shops.
