Laura Scales House
is one of the 10 houses of "the Quad." The
complex was built in stages starting in 1922, when a housing
shortage prevented all students from living on campus. When
all the houses were completed in 1936, William Allen Neilson,
then president of Smith, pronounced it the "Great Quadrangle."
Laura Scales and its sister house, Franklin King, were built in 1935 and 1936. Both of the houses offer mostly single rooms. Together they from a semicircle and enclose a small courtyard that provides a great place for springtime sunbathing, Frisbee, picnics, and more. This area is also known as "diploma circle" because graduates receive their diploma here during Commencement.
Laura
Scales was named after Laura Woolsey Lord Scales of the
class of 1901. Scales was Smith's first dean of students,
a post which she held for 22 years.
On the first floor is a spacious living room, which has a piano, a fireplace and a televison. There is also a first-floor house library which is always quiet and provides a good alternative place to work. Student rooms are upstairs; every room is wired for CyberSmith.
A major renovation in the summer of 2001 included new windows, replacement of the slate roof, refinished floors and upgraded electric, plumbing and other mechanical systems throughout the building. New finishes, lighting and new and refurbished furnishings were installed throughout. The student and public bathrooms were gutted and new modern fixtures and finishes installed. Other enhancements to the building included new accessible ramps for access to the first floor and new passenger elevators.
