Gardiner House is one
of the 10 houses of "the Quad." The Quad was built
in stages starting in 1922 and it now houses the largest
concentration of students on campus. On nice days,
especially in spring you can see quad residents playing Frisbee
or sunbathing on the lawn. All 10 houses are constantly
engaged in a friendly competition to determine who is "Best
of The Quad" -- a distinction determined by who has
successfully stolen the "Best of the Quad" banner
from the house that previously possessed it.
Gardiner house is a 10-minute
walk to campus and a 15-minute walk to downtown Northampton. The
path to campus is very scenic, passing the president 's house
and Paradise Pond.
The first floor of Gardiner House has two common areas. The living room is huge, with tons of windows, French doors, a piano and a television. Gardinerites congregate in the living room to watch television every Friday. Gardiner also has a large study on the first floor, which, when not being used for studying, is occasionally used for lip-synch contests or competitive games of Taboo.
Gardiner's top three floors contain 12 double rooms, 56 single rooms, and one triple room. Sophomores returning to Gardiner house nearly always get singles. The doubles, however, are pretty nice. Most of them are on the fourth floor, and have two windows and a hollow window seat great for storing things (weeks worth of dirty laundry is a favorite.) The second, third and fourth floors have a hall phone and common bathroom. All but one of the first floor rooms come with private or semi-private bathrooms.
In 1995 Gardiner's old roof was replaced with new Vermont slate. Every room in Gardiner comes equipped with CyberSmith, providing high-speed, dedicated access to the Internet.
Gardiner, being one of the largest houses on campus, is a great place to live and work for Smith students of all kinds. Gardiner residents are a unique and strive to make the house community an outstanding part of the Smith experience.
