CUSHING HOUSE

Cushing House is one of the 10 houses of "the Quad." The complex was built in stages starting in 1922, when a housing shortage prevented all students from living on campus. When all the houses were completed in 1936, William Allen Neilson, then president of Smith, pronounced it the "Great Quadrangle." The short path from the Quad to the center of campus passes the president's house and offers a beautiful view of Paradise Pond.

Since academic buildings are a 10-minute walk away and Northampton's business district is a 15-minute walk, many students enjoy having a bicycle. Cushing is also easily accessible to the fare-free Five College bus service, which allows many students to take advantage of the Five College interchange system. The buses are also an easy way to get around the Pioneer Valley.

Cushing has four floors where students from every class are equally involved in maintaining a supportive community environment. The first floor living room is a favorite place for students to hold social functions, or to just hang out. It also offers a quiet and cozy place for students to read. This is especially true in the winter, when the living room fireplace is in frequent use.  Cushing also has two study rooms on the first floor where students can find an alternative place to work if their roommate is asleep or if the library is closed.

Continuing traditions are what many students appreciate the most about Cushing House. Every year for Halloween, residents dress up and parade through the house during "floor to floor" trick-or-treating. For the holiday season, when students are near completing their fall semester, "Holiday Hobbits" are a fun way to relieve some of the stress as finals approach. Enthusiasm to participate in traditions such as these is what makes the Cushing House community so special. Finally, Cushing House prides itself on its friendly attitude.

During the summer of 1995, Cushing had the old slate roof replaced with new Vermont slate. In addition, new bathrooms, new windows, and new carpet were added. Cushing is also wired for CyberSmith.
