COMSTOCK HOUSE

Comstock House is one of the 10 houses of "the Quad." The complex was built in stages starting in 1922, when a housing shortage prevented all students from living on campus. When all the houses were completed in 1936, William Allen Neilson, then the president of Smith, pronounced it the "Great Quadrangle." Although today's students just call it "the Quad," they still think it's a great place to live.

Comstock CornerstoneComstock and its twin neighbor, Wilder, were built in 1928. They share a covered front entrance and a bell tower, and their back wings join to form a courtyard which is nicknamed the "mini-quad."

Although Comstock has a twin, it has many traditions which set it apart from the rest. The house is haunted by a friendly ghost named Gloria. Gloria rattles doors and makes unexpected appearances to Comstock sleepers. Each semester, various students host roomwarming, which is a great study break and an opportunity to visit other student rooms. Traditionally the first-year students plan a small house activity during Halloween, like roasting marshmallows and sharing scary stories. Senior dinner is one of the last chances for the whole house to gather before final exams and graduation. Each class does something for the seniors whether it be poems, toasts, or prophecies. The night ends with seniors willing their items to the underclass students.

Wilder and Comstock housesThere are 80 students in Comstock, who live in the house's 59 single rooms, 9 double rooms, and 1 triple room. The walls are neutral wallpaper and the floors are hardwood. Although most of the windows are 72" high and 48" wide, rooms in the maids' quarters and rooms with bay windows are of different sizes. Many of the single rooms have a splendid view of Paradise Pond.

Washers and dryers are located in the basement of Comstock; soda machines are located on the first floor. Every room is wired for CyberSmith and cable television.

Comstock recently underwent major renovations, including the installation of an elevator and new bathrooms. Renovations included a complete replacement of all building HVAC, plumbing, electrical and life safety systems. New finishes, lighting and new and refurbished furnishings were installed throughout. New ramps to the first floor and a new passenger elevator provides access to all floors.
